Fluoride was introduced into the water supply of the United States sixty years ago. Today, sixty-six percent of the United States water-supply is fluoridated. It was introduced to fight tooth decay in children. Fluoride is also found in toothpastes and some mouthwashes.
The fluoride used in 90% of the drinking water is hydrofluoric acid which is a compound of fluorine that is a toxic waste byproduct of many types of heavy industry such as aluminum, steel, phosphate fertilizer, glass, cement, nuclear weapons manufacturing and other industries. Fluoride is more poisonous than lead and just slightly less poisonous than arsenic. Fluoride is the active toxin in rat poisons and cockroach powder.
In Europe, 98% of the water supply has no fluoride as a result of rejection by government leadership. The United States is one of eight countries in the entire developed world that fluoridates more than 50 percent of its water supply. The other seven are: Australia, Colombia, Ireland, Israel, Malaysia, New Zealand and Singapore.
Studies about Fluoridation and Tooth Decay
Studies about the effectiveness of fluoride to fight tooth decay were published in the 1940’s. Two large studies were performed looking at the effectiveness of fluoride with prevention of tooth decay in the late 1980’s with school age children from ages 5-17 in the United States and New Zealand. The US study showed no difference in tooth decay between children with fluoridated and non-fluoridated water supplies. The New Zealand study showed that the children with non-fluoridated water actually had fewer cavities!
Books written about Water Fluoridation
The book The Greatest Fraud: Fluoridation, published by a dentist in Australia in 1996, said the 1940’s studies were of dubious scientific quality about the use of fluoride. The 2004 book, The Fluoride Deception, tightly researched the scientific and declassified documents about fluoride that were developed at the end of World War 2. This book has impressive research to demonstrate fluoride’s harmfulness and was written by a BBC correspondent.
Dr. Paul Connett a chemist, specializing in environmental chemistry, is also the head of the Fluoride Action Network. He has written The Case Against Fluoride, published September, 2010. He points out that chemicals used to fluoridate the water are not pharmaceutical grade, but rather hazardous waste products of the phosphate fertilizer industry. It is illegal to dump these products into rivers and lakes or release these gases into the atmosphere. He says water fluoridation is a prime example of one of the worst medical practices possible-forced medication with no control over the dose or who gets it.
Scientific Concerns with Fluoridation
Dental fluorosis is the most recognized problem with too much fluoride. The tooth enamel does not crystallize properly in the permanent teeth of children and the tooth appearance is chalky and blotchy to rust colored. There can be brittleness and surface pitting of these teeth. Malnourished children are at greatest risk to experience these effects. In 2006, the American Dental Association warned parents of infants not to use fluoridated water when mixing infant formula.
Fluoride is a powerful central nervous system toxin. There is a Chinese study concerned that fluoride was lowering the IQ of children. The fluoridating agents most commonly used in the United States not only increase the uptake of lead into children’s blood but are also associated with an increase in violent behavior.
Fluoride has been linked with the formation of osteosarcoma, a bone cancer. It has been linked with increased hip fracture and bone fragility as the fluoride concentrates in bones over years of ingestion. There are serious concerns about a connection between fluoridation and the current epidemic of arthritis.
Fluoride has the ability to destroy human enzymes which are necessary for essential cell reactions that take place every second of our lives. Fluoride accumulates in the pineal gland, possibly lowering the production of melatonin, a very important regulatory hormone. In animal studies, fluoride at 1 ppm (one part per million) in drinking water increases the uptake of aluminum into the brain. Counties with 3 ppm or more of fluoride in their water have lower fertility rates.
When there is excess fluoride in the body, the function of the thyroid gland and the use of iodine in the body are impaired. In the US, there is an epidemic of hypothyroidism. The symptoms of hypothyroidism include obesity, lethargy, depression, and heart disease. These are also the symptoms of fluoride poisoning. Fluoride has been used for decades as an anti-thyroid medication to treat hyperthyroidism. Iodine deficiency is the most common cause of brain damage and mental disability in the world.
Rising Level of Fluoride in Beverages and Food
The level of fluoride in products besides water has steadily increased since the 1940’s. The amount set for the water supply in the 1940’s was 1 ppm (one part per million) which equals to 1mg/liter. It was assumed in the 1940’s that the total intake of fluoride would be 1 mg/day which is the equivalent of drinking 4 eight ounce glasses of water each day. Fluoride is now also added to toothpaste, and found in beverages, processed food, fresh fruits and vegetables (from the fluoridated water supply to grow these crops), vitamins and supplements. The fluoride in toothpaste is 1,000 ppm and fluoride dental rinses are 10,000 ppm.
One study in 2003 estimated that Americans now ingest 8mg/day of fluoride which is 8 times the optimal level set in the 1940’s. Hydrofluosilicic Acid, a commercial fluoride used in water treatment plants, has these long term effects with high ingestion: changes in bone, corrosivity of the mucous membranes, coughing, shock, pulmonary edema, fluorosis, coma and death.
What Can You Do?
You need to find out if the water supply is fluoridated in your town or city. People living in communities with fluoridated water supplies need to avoid fluoridated water, fluoridated toothpaste and fluoride dental rinses to lower the fluoride level in their body.
Reverse osmosis is the best water purification system that removes fluoride from tap water. There are also under sink and kitchen counter-top water purifiers that remove fluoride from water.
In California, Texas and other states, concerned citizens have contested the use of fluoride in city water supplies.
