There are some really good barbecue places in Macon. Many are scattered around the city, but for out-of-town visitors there are places in which are convenient in regard to proximity of hotel districts on the west side (I-475) or north side (Interstate 75) part of town.
1.Sonny’s Real Pit Barbecue (Interstate-475 at Exit 3, near Presidential Parkway) This is a very popular place in town. The price is reasonable, and the selection of food is rather comprehensive. You don’t feel you left there without being full satisfied. The service is friendly and makes you want to come back. I had met some out-of-town visitors and often had very complimentary things about Sonny’s. Some want to stay at hotels close to restaurants and this is in walking distance of Red Roof Inns-West and Rodeway Inn and across the highway from the Hampton Inn.
There is an appetizer which are called corn nuggets which is very unique, but very tasty. I would definitely recommend it. Plus, I would recommend the Ol’ Southern Recipe Stew on their menu as a side item. Their barbecue ribs are spectacular and I love the sauce they use. This place doesn’t have a delivery service. It is mostly a dine-in restaurant..
2. Fresh Air Barbecue is located on Riverside Drive off Interstate 75 at Exit 167. It is at a very conveinent location for locals and travelers. This restaurant has a history and been around since the early 1930’s. One of my favorite dishes is their Brunswick stew. Their barbecue is slow-cooked and has a very unique taste. The sauce is also very distinct. One can have a choice between their barbecue sauce with a strong vinegar flavor or a more tomato-based, ketchup flavor. Either way you can’t go wrong. I would recommend BBQ Pork Ribs by the slab.
3. Fincher’s Barbecue off of Gray Highway in Macon has a lot of history and a strong reputation across Macon and Central Georgia. Finchers’ Barbecue first opened in the mid 1930’s.It is a family-based business and has award-winning mouth-watering barbecue.
4.Satterfield’s has a very comprehensive menu and offer dine-in, online and delivery options for its customers. Located on New Street in downtown Macon provides a convenient location for out-of-town visitors and their restaurant is also closest to the museum district and other local landmarks.
5. J.L. Barbecue deserves a mention as well. They are located on Brookhaven Drive in Macon.
