Most kids are picky about their food. There are things they refuse to eat, like most veggies, and other things they would choose every night. It’s up to moms to get creative and introduce amusing foods that picky kids will enjoy.
Let me introduce the food-bar concept for children. Think dipping, dunking and finger foods.
Here are a few of my time-tested kid foods to entice your little selective eater:
Hot Dog Bar:
Place a turkey hot dog on a whole wheat bun and let your picky kids create an original hot dog:
Shredded Cheddar Cheese
Mustard & Mayo
Pork and Beans
Dunking Chicken Bar
Put six chicken nuggets on each plate. Put various dipping and dunking items on the kitchen bar such as:
Sauté fajita meat and any suggested vegetables. (Onion, carrots and/or bell peppers for example.)Warm-up desired amount of flour tortillas. Spread fajita meat on tortilla and let your children select from:
Chopped Red or Yellow Bell Peppers
Bean Soup Bar
Everyone needs to eat more beans and lentils! Beans contain all eight amino acids that the body must obtain from outside sources. In addition, dried beans contain magnesium, calcium, potassium and iron.
Canned or homemade, soup is guaranteed to warm little tummy’s on a cold dreary day.
My kids particularly liked Navy Bean soup and Split Pea soup, but you know yours best.
Fill bowls with piping hot bean soup and let your kids pick from:
Crispy Crackers – to make crispy crackers spread thin crackers with butter. Brown in oven and serve hot.
Cheese Toast – put a slice of cheese on buttered wheat or oatmeal bread and broil in oven.
Sliced Apples or Individual Boxes of Raisins
Keep a stock of individual cartons of: pudding, Jell-O, applesauce, cottage cheese, yogurt and unsweetened fruit.
Foods for Picky Kids
The food bar concept allows your child to select their foods of choice. Choices make kids feel important; that mommy values their opinion.
You will be in for a pleasant surprise when you no longer have to nag picky kids to eat!
