Maybe you like the holidays, maybe you hate them, maybe you love them but just can’t seem to get into the spirit. Either way, I’ve found a few things in my life that have really made me want to celibate the holidays.
Put on Holiday Cheers
One of the best and easiest ways to put yourself in the mood, can be simply to add things that have to do with the holidays, into your routine. Watch a holiday movie, or turn on Christmas classics to listen to. I myself was surprised at how much I started to enjoy the coming of the holidays once they started having Thanksgiving and Christmas specials on TV.
Give Your House the Holiday Ambiance
Get together and put some decorations up. This is like turning your house into a holiday home. Haven’t you ever had to do homework and just couldn’t get in the mood to do it until you actually sat down say at a library or something? Granted this is different (holidays are so much more fun than homework!), but the whole idea is to turn your environment into that which you wish participate in more. After all, a library highlights books and learning (great for homework), while the holidays can be enhanced with decorations (great for Christmas, Hanukkah Kwanzaa, etc.).
Once autumn hit, the days got shorter, the nights longer, and rain rain rain. But, for some reason, whenever I got together with my family and did something as simple as baking cookies, it really seemed to make the house more “cozy” and it made Christmas seem like it was right around the corner. This is strange coming from me, because I’m not in love with cooking, and I don’t even really like sweets that much, but it was just simply the fact that we were baking cookies that added a real ambiance to the house, making it seem more like a home than a house.
Spend Time Others
Who is special in your life? Family? Friends? Maybe even someone as beloved as your cat Fluffy. Either way, the holidays are special in that they really invite people to share their lives with their loved ones. This is probably the best part about holidays, and the best way to experience them.
One of my favorite parts of the holidays is the giving. As a child, I had loved very much to unwrap my presents, just like any kid. But over the years, I’ve found it much more rewarding to give to others than to receive. For some reason, going shopping for those I care about and then wrapping gifts up only to see their glowing faces later, gives me a lot of joy. Maybe it does for you, too, and the best part is, you can never start early when it comes to presents. Don’t be put off by the idea of giving to those you don’t know either; I’m sure the families who are struggling financially this year will much appreciate any help they receive from donation programs. If you’ve given before, you know how rewarding it feels and how much the very idea can put you into the holiday spirit.
