My environment is going green this spring of 2011. The kitchen and bathrooms are my biggest jobs. The stove, refrigerator, microwave, cabinets can be cleaned inside and out with the same non-toxic disinfectant. Add a tablespoon of Castile liquid soap, one half cup of white distilled vinegar, two tablespoons of baking soda and borax bleach to a quart size bowl. Fill the rest of the way with hot water and mix. I prepare the same mixture for a spray bottle with a pump sprayer.
My eco-friendly family recycles ragged t-shirts, towels and sheets into approximately twelve inch square cloths. These serve as my cleaning rags and towels. As I remove food from my refrigerator I note expiration dates. Old food gets tossed into the compost bin, plastics and glass is separated into specific recycle bins. Items are also divided as I go through the cupboards. I clean and organize as I restock my shelves.
Cleaning isn’t finished until I have used lemon oil. I add one teaspoon of essential lemon oil to one cup of extra light olive oil. This polishes faucets, countertops and cabinet doors. I carefully dampen a cloth with lemon oil then polish and wipe off any excess. Lemon oil leaves a clean high sheen and reduces mineral buildup around faucets.
Borax Bleach is an excellent nontoxic cleaner for the toilet. After scouring the bowl, I clean the rims, sides and seat I move to the tub and shower. I use borax bleach on any signs of mold. A brush helps get into those hard to reach crevices. White distilled vinegar is an eco-friendly cleaner for mineral build-up and soap scum. However, use caution when using white distilled vinegar around chrome as it may etch the metal. I dry the walls, doors, tile and polish lightly with lemon oil. Lemon oil removes the white soap scum appearance.
I fill an eight ounce bottle with a multi-purpose solution that is a nontoxic bacteria destroyer. The essential oil solution is 30 drops of Lavender, 30 drops Lemon, 15 drops Bergamot and 15 drops Orange. I add the drops to the sprayer and fill with water. I spray this on the toilet rim, seat and lid after I’ve cleaned. Finally, I apply peppermint essential oil on the thresholds of my entrances to repel ants and flying bugs. Oils are nontoxic yet discourage insects from invading my green clean environment!
