It’s a Halloween tradition for kids to stuff themselves with trick-or-treat candy. Before your goblins get their sugar overload, and become real demons, feed them some nutritional treats. Here are fun, healthy trick-or-treat and Halloween party recipes.
Healthy caramel apples: Caramel apples look cool on a stick. But they are nearly impossible to eat. Caramel apples usually end up as one sticky mess. Here’s a less messy alternative. Cut the apples into wedges. Sprinkle with lemon juice or pineapple juice to prevent apples from getting brown. Serve with caramel dip, or, for a super healthy snack, try peanut butter dip. Mix equal parts natural creamy style peanut butter with plain yogurt.
Healthy caramel corn: Like the caramel apples, popcorn balls are very difficult to eat. Here’s a neater snack that’s easier to eat and healthy. Click here for my healthy popcorn recipes. Use any popcorn snack variety you wish; the ‘healthy caramel corn’ tastes just like but is much healthier because it is made with trans fat free butter, honey and peanut butter. You can make a popcorn buffet or Chicago style popcorn, using the recipes listed.
Halloween sandwich cut outs: make any kind of sandwich that your children like. Using metal Halloween cookie cutters, cut sandwiches into pumpkins, ghosts or other spooky shapes. No cookie cutters? No problem. Use any glass mouth to cut round shapes. With spray cheese, draw pumpkin ‘lines’ or a smiling jack-o-lantern.
Open face Jack-o-lantern sandwiches: Make an open face sandwich. Spread it with cheese spread. Cut triangles from green pepper or cucumber to make a jack-o-lantern face. A piece of green pepper or celery makes a great pumpkin ‘stem’. Option two: Cut bread into circle shape using wide mouth jar opening. Spread bread with cream cheese or butter. Cut a jack-o-lantern face in a round slice of deli cheese or lunchmeat (Hormel Natural Choice contain no nitrates or nitrites). Place deli meat or cheese face on sandwich.
