Winter will be here before you know it. Each season offers the opportunity to come up with some creative winter time activities for your homeschooler. During the winter season I really enjoy combing the season with another thing that kids like, and that’s animals. Kids love activities that involve animals. Below you will find several ideas that you can do during the winter months and use penguins as the main theme. You can even decorate the classroom with small penguins. Below are some fun activity ideas.
Penguin number line
One way that you can decorate the classroom and help your children learn is to have them help you create a penguin number line. If you have more than one child, you can have each child do the opposite numbers. For example if you have two children you can have one do all the odd numbers, and one do all of the even numbers. You can easily make your own traceable penguin stencil for the kids to trace. Start by finding a picture online of a small sized penguin. You can then trace the sheet onto a piece of construction paper. Or you can have the kids trace them onto the construction paper, and cut them out. In the middle of the penguin you can have the children write the number. Whatever numbers they are working on you can have them write on the penguins. You can easily hang them up around the room in order for your number line.
Penguin words are very easy to make and put together. You can stat by tracing pictures of small baby penguins. I like to use the baby penguins to make lower case letters and the adult penguins to make the capital letters. After you have finished cutting out the penguins with the different letters on them, you can laminate them if you have the machine. Laminating them will really make the letters to last longer. You do not have to make the entire alphabet, but just enough to make a few sight words, and sentences. Then you can play a word making game with your child as part of their sight word lesson.
Write on the penguin
Penguin cutouts can be a lot of fun to have the kids dress up. First trace the penguin pictures as mentioned above. Visit your local arts and craft store and purchase some magnets for the back of the penguins. The penguins should be laminated for them to work the way you want. Al you need is a strong thin magnetic strip. Glue the strip to the back of the penguins. You can then hang the penguin up on the refrigerator and the kids can easily use a dry erase marker to write their name or words on the penguin.
