An ordinary, scoop-neck t-shirt is not an expensive article of clothing. However, if the shirt has the slightest enhancement, like an applique or piping, it can double in cost. That’s crazy! It’s still just an ordinary, scoop-neck t-shirt. If you enjoy wearing simple t-shirts, but would like each one to look a little different than the next, you won’t have to pay extra money for an embellished shirt. You can easily give one of your scoop-neck shirts a completely different look for pennies!
You don’t have to be someone who sews to give a t-shirt a make-over. If you can tie a string you can change the look of the neckline completely. In fact, the shirt you change doesn’t even have to be a scoop-neck; it can be a “v” neck, too. Decide on the design you want to make, and a few minutes later, it will be completed!
Try on the shirt you want to change and make a small dot to mark a spot where you will create a hole. The dot should be made in the center of the shirt, down a few inches from the neckline, about where the lower area of your bra is. Mark this dot, remove the shirt, then make a hole where the dot is.
Cut a length of ribbon and place one end through the hole, going in from the backside, and coming out the front. Pull it up to meet the opposite end of the ribbon. Tie the ribbon once, tightly, then once again. Or, tie it once, then tie it in a bow. Make a large bow or a small one; make a tie that hangs long or is cut short. There are various designs you can do depending upon the color of the ribbon as opposed to the color of the shirt, the length of the ribbon, and the width of it.
If you don’t want the shirt to have a noticeable ribbon and/or bow in the front do something a little different. Push the ribbon in the hole, from the front to the back, then tie the knot on the backside. Now the knot is concealed and all that can be seen is the tiniest bit of ribbon in front.
When you use a piece of twine, string, ribbon or similar tie you create a gathered look for the bustline of the shirt. It’s a dressier look for an ordinary scoop-neck or v-neck shirt that’s easy to accomplish without sewing!
