I have listened to and heard a great deal of talking heads and political pundits over the past few days and as I was doing my quiet time reading a few minutes ago I was reading through Psalm 33. As I read verses 10-12 I was reminded that even if there is a change in the balance of powers in the U.S. Government, we as a nation may have a reprieve of some bad policies and some even rescinded, our country is still moving towards great peril. Listen to what the Scriptures say:
“10 The Lord brings the counsel of the nations to nothing; He frustrates the plans of the peoples. 11 The counsel of the Lord stands forever, the plans of His heart to all generations. 12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom He has chosen as His heritage.”
So, even with the vast knowledge that many of the talking heads have and the political saavy of one party over another, still it is only the counsel of the Lord that will stand forever. It is clear in His counsel that it is only the nation “…whose God is the Lord…” is the one that will be blessed. While our nation was founded on His principles they have been utterly perverted over the years and I don’t think we can truly call our nation one whose God is the Lord. Many of His children are here…many who profess His name reside here…many who serve Him faithfully are living throughout the United States. However, I think we would be hard pressed to call our nation overall as one whose God is the Lord.
So as we head out to the election polling stations…and vote for the candidates we believe God wants us to vote for, we need to ensure that we also pray for these men and women who will be voted in today to be spiritually renewed. If they are believers and have been serving in politics for a period of time and have not actively supported things that would honor and glorify our Lord…that they would stand up and start doing so. If they have not been actively using their positions to bring glory to His name, stand for the widows and the orphans, speak out against oppression, that God would give the the boldness and courage to do so.
Some of the pundits have been correct that even if there is a change in political power it is only the beginning. That is because, we as a nation, need to turn our hearts, minds and homes back towards the Lord. Our leaders need to truly acknowledge Him as Lord God and Sovereign in all things. Then and only then will our nation start resembling the one spoken of in this passage.
