I remember the day my lil bro and sis were left alone in the kitchen for ONE minute and when the adults returned to the room, one was covered head-to-toe in blue food coloring, the other in red, naked as jaybirds. While the little tykes thought it was hilarious beyond measure, my grandma had to use quick thinking to rectify her Smurf and lobster grandchildren so they could be introduced to civilization again. Here is how she did it, and a few other tips for removing less severe stains off your skin as well.
For my little siblings, it was time for the scrubbing of their lives with a baking soda soak. Baking soda lifts stains off your skin the way it does off of clothing, and these colored toddlers were no exception. With a loofah and baking soda poured over their bodies and turned into a paste, my grandma was able to scrub away the damage with a few applications until it was all gone. For areas like the fingernails she used toothpaste and a toothbrush, and it pulled the color right out. She also used toothpaste on the elbows and along their heels. After about 4 or 5 rinses, my siblings came out of the tub pink and shiny as brand-new babies, and didn’t look to happy about being squeaky clean.
I use Acetone fingernail polish remover to get stains off my skin. When I dye my hair and I get dye on my ears or face I immediately put polish remover on a cotton ball and dab away. If you scrub you will burn your skin, but dabbing draws out the stain without hurting your skin. Facial astringent or witch hazel works as well. I have not had great luck with rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide. I like Acetone nail polish remover the best.
Acetone also removes glue from your fingers from projects, or nail glue. A quick dab of polish remover takes the glue right off.
So the next time you get food coloring all over you, or any type of dye, remember the baking soda paste and scrub (using a toothbrush really speeds up the process) and polish remover or an astringent of some kind. Comes in handy when you don’t want to leave the house looking like a Smurf.
