Today’s “God Calling” message reminds me that preachers, teachers and leaders are to point the way, but that we must seek Christ and God’s Word for ourselves. We can’t establish and develop a relationship with Him just by sitting in church and hearing the Word. While faith comes by hearing the Word, faith without works is dead. You’re not going to establish and develop a relationship with the Lord through the preachers, teachers and leaders. The only way to establish a relationship with the Lord is by seeking Him yourself in prayer, praise and worship, and in His Word. Jesus said, “You search the scriptures because you think in them you have eternal life, but you refuse to come to me that you might have life. Jesus is the Word made flesh. He is God’s Wisdom, power, and love-all of God’s attributes, manifested in the flesh.
The red letter words in the Bible are the words Jesus spoke. They were certainly very powerful in my life when I first began to really study the Word. I spent hours reading and rereading them. I always felt like I’d been sitting right at His feet. They opened up the Word of God to me. They prepared my heart to receive the truth in God’s Word. We have to spend time studying God’s Word for ourselves. First, how is that Word going to rise up in you if you don’t have it in you? Secondly, the less we know of God and of His Word, the more easily we can be deceived. Listening to someone else preach or teach the Word is wonderful. We’re supposed to teach and admonish one another in all wisdom. It encourages us, and God can speak to us through others. But we have to be alert and aware of the truth. Colossians chapters 2 and 3 talk about false doctrine and false teachers. Jesus was talking to the Pharisees, scholars of the law when He said, “These people honor me with their lips but their hearts are far from me.” They were teaching human precepts as doctrine.
We want to know the Lord intimately, and we want a strong knowledge of His Word. The Bible tells us to be rooted and grounded in His Word. That means digging deep for ourselves. Spending time in prayer, praise and worship and in studying the Word ourselves is the way we get to know Jesus and the Father. Sitting in church and listening to other’s preach and teach about leaves us with exactly that-a knowledge of him or about Him. He wants us all to know Him intimately. He wants an intimate relationship with each one of us.
