Forget about tiny, little spiders made from pipe cleaners or cheap, plastic spiders you buy at the store. You can easily make a huge spider that will frighten all your Halloween visitors. It’s made from a milk jug and a few other supplies. It’s spooky, it’s large and it can be used to decorate inside or out.
Use a sharp knife to cut the spout off of the jug. Do not remove any part of the handle; go right above the handle and cut a circle around the spout to remove it. Now use black duct or electrical tape to completely cover the jug. Start by covering the hole then working your way down to the bottom of the jug. Cover the bottom as well.
If you browse around at a home improvement store you’ll find long, black foam tubes meant for insulating pipes. The pipe insulation is not expensive and is perfect for making the legs of the giant spider. Purchase four pieces which are six foot long and a half-inch in diameter.
Lay the jug on a flat surface so that the handle is facing upwards. Mark the center of each insulation piece and position it on the handle of the jug. So, with the handle up, lay four tubes across the jug, positioning them so that the center of each is laid, side-by-side, across the handle. Tape the tubes in place. The insulation tubes now stick out on each side of the jug, four on one side and four on the other side, to form the legs.
Measure each tube, from the jug handle to the end, and mark the center. Do this to all four legs on each side. Cut a small triangle out at the mark to make a bend in each leg. Now use the black tape to secure the bend in each leg. To do this, bend the leg so that the bend is pointing upwards, then wrap the tape horizontally around the leg, just below the bend.
It’s easy to make eyes for the giant spider when you use two plastic Easter eggs. Separate the eggs into four sections and use the two largest sections. Make pupils by cutting two long, narrow diamond shapes from black tape and sticking one to each of the eggs. Tape the eyes to the area where you cut off the spout of the jug. Now, if you want, cut designs from red or green tape and stick them on the back of the spider. This decoration can sit in the yard, on the porch or nearly anywhere else. It’s gigantic, it’s creepy and it’s a lot of fun to make!
