Gilbert Arenas trade rumors to the Orlando Magic appear to be nothing more than rumors. New trade rumors involving Arenas going to Orlando in some form of a deal that would bring back Vince Carter started popping up again this week, but they were just set down by CBS Sports writer Ken Berger.
According to Berger, he has sources which state that there has been no new movement in an effort for the Magic to acquire Arenas from the Washington Wizards. Trade discussions had taken place during the offseason, but nothing came of it, despite the thought that an Arenas-for-Carter trade would infuse the Magic with a bit of energy at the shooting guard position. It’s hard to argue against Arenas being able to help Orlando, especially with how much youth he has on Carter at this point.
Apparently the Magic have been willing to discuss any type of trade with anyone, as long as it doesn’t involve Dwight Howard. It’s good for a franchise to have such an open mind, and it shows Magic general manager Otis Smith is always looking to improve the talent level they have on the court. Sure, it doesn’t mean the Magic are going to pull the trigger on a trade just because it sounds good, but it sends a message that they are always looking to get better. What more could a fan ask for from the franchise?
So why do trade rumors involving Arenas and the Magic keep coming up? It’s because of the close relationship that Magic GM Smith has with Arenas, leading many to assume that Smith would love to get Arenas on his roster. A trade during the offseason probably didn’t happen because of the status of Arenas, who has been trying to recover from several injuries that cost him major time on the court. That doesn’t even get into his troubles with the law, most of which seem to have subsided in recent months.
This season for the Wizards, Arenas has been doing pretty well, showing that he can indeed be an offensive threat for an NBA team. He is averaging 17.3 points and 5.1 assists per game through Wednesday night, but that still might not be worth the nearly $18 million he makes in salary this year. He also has a lot of money (and years) left on his current contract that has made it very difficult for Washington to trade him.
The Wizards are a team that is trying to rebuild, and while Arenas is still one of their star players, the franchise could probably be helped a lot if they were able to call this “John Wall’s team” in the very near future. Arenas does have a lot of value still, and at just 28 years old, it seems he could have a number of good years in front of him. That still doesn’t make up for his transgressions, though, and he has a ways to go in order to prove he will be a “clean” star another team can rely upon.
