Imagine spending a thousand dollars on a really expensive dress, a trip to the beauty salon to get your hair and nails done, and expensive makeup from Sephora just to attend a high school homecoming dance. Imagine trying to get into the dance only to be told by the school administrators that the dress you are wearing is unacceptable. This is exactly what happened at Mesquite High School in Mesquite, Texas. Since these dresses were all strapless and had very short skirts, one can only wonder why the girls who wore these dresses would want to look like a hooker at the homecoming dance. Having never attended a school where homecomings nor dances were held at, I cannot imagine what such an event is like but I do know one thing: after having seen the news clip of these 17 year old girls wearing the described dresses, I can only think of one thing: Exactly what are they trying to attract? Certainly not a gentleman, since no gentleman would ever want to dance with a young girl dressed that way. One school administrator said the girls could get in to the dance if they were dressed more modestly (yes, they do make dresses that have sleeves and cover the breasts fully, and the legs, believe it or not) yet the girls who were singled out feel that the school owes them an apology. An apology for their choice to wear revealing dresses to a school dance? That does seem like too much. After all, why should these girls blame the school for how they were treated? As for the girls and their mothers “putting a lot of thought into buying the dresses”, well, it does not seem as if they really put a lot of thought into buying the dress. Growing up, even I was never allowed to wear certain types of clothing (too tight pants, revealing tops, spaghetti strap shirts, sleeveless shirts) and to this day I have never even owned nor worn a strapless dress nor a spaghetti strap or sleeveless shirt. These Mesquite High School girls did not have to buy their dresses from the latest fashionable shop; they could have just as easily purchased them from a consignment store.
No, these girls are not owed an apology for their poor decision to wear dresses that can be construed as looseness, girls who have no self respect (women with healthy self esteem and respect do not wear immodest clothing). With dresses like that, after the dance could lead to something even worse, like a night in the back seat of their boyfriend’s cars. The state of Texas has the highest teen pregnancy rate in the entire nation, so frankly I am not surprised at the administrators’ take on the situation at Mesquite High School. Of course, if they even had half a brain, they would do away with this business of high school dances and homecomings as such since they are not productive to the development of the teenage mind.
