“Acafellas” starts out with Schuester and Terri sitting at dinner with Schuester’s parents. Schuester is looking proud, and stands up, before Terri can stop him, and announces “Mom, Dad, Terri’s pregnant!” and with a grin on his face he announces it’s a boy. Terri looks upset by this announcement and asks Schuester, “Honey, I thought we weren’t going to tell anybody?” Schuester’s parents are elated and swear they’ll keep the secret safe.
The newly expanded Glee club is finding Schuester’s choreography bland, and all of the members begin to talk amongst themselves. Rachel speaks out, telling Schuester that although he’s an excellent vocal coach, he isn’t a trained choreographer. The club presents the idea of hiring a well known choreographer that works with Vocal Adrenaline.
A teacher by the name of Ahnry, returns to work after slicing off his thumbs while working in shop class under the influence of cough syrups. The male teachers, included the discharged pot-selling teacher Sandy, bring a cake to the teacher’s lounge, welcoming Ahnry back. The guys break into song, singing “For he’s a jolly good fellow.” Suddenly, Schuester decides to form his own choir group, and dubs it the “Acafellas.”
Schuester, after starting the Acafellas, stops showing up to practices and when Rachel makes cookies and offers an apology, letting him know the group needs him back, he tells her it’s more reason to hire the professional, Dakota Stanley. The group, with the exception of Finn, vote in favor of hiring Dakota, while Finn maintains that they shouldn’t do this to Schuester. Finn threatens Rachel with the idea that he may quit, and Rachel tells him he dosen’t care.
The cheerleaders, talking to Sue, the cheerleading coach, reveal that hiring Dakota, is really just a plot to throw them off. The cheerleaders assure sue that Dakota is tough and the Glee club will get eaen alive, and may even commit suicide when Dakota is through with them.
The Acafellas finally make a public performance. Emma, the guidance counselor, struggles not to show her pleasure with the performance and it becomes obvious there may be some tension between her and Schuester. The principal then tells Schuester he wants him to perform for the student’s parents at a PTA event. The newspaper’s reviews on the group were great, with the exception of Howard, leaving the group elated. Sandy then insists that he be allowed to join the group because he has connection with a guy who could make the group big.
The Glee club takes a field trip to see Vocal Adrenaline and sees two members outside of the school, one puking into the trash can and the other telling her she can’t leave practice for any reason. Rachel boldy approaches her telling the puking girl they’l like to hire Dakota. The vomiting girl warns her not too, looking terrified. The group finally talks to Dakota as he’s leaving and finds out that his fee per number is $8,000.
Emma walks in on Ken and Schuester who just found out that Howard quit the group. Emma announces that Ahnry has taken up his cough syrup habit, and is now in the ER. She also informs them that Ahnry is required to to go to rehab before being allowed back and will not be able to perform for the PTA meeting. It becomes apparent the acafellas group is breaking up.
Finn goes to Schuester and tells him that he is qutting the Glee club. Schuester tries to convince him to stay. In the meantime, one of the football players, Noah, makes an offer to join the acafellas to Ken, in hopes of finding a “couger,” or rather, an older woman, since high school girls we’re getting old for him. Noah joins the group along with Finn.
Tina and Rachel approach Mercedes about a “Gayvention,” or rather a gay intervention. They tell her they know she likes the more flamboyant Glee club member, Kurt. Mercedes stands up for Kurt, telling them that just because he dresses nice dosen’t mean he’s gay. While working at the car wash fundraiser to raise the money to hire Dakota, Mercedes asks Kurt that if, since they’ve gone out three times, if they could make it “official.” Kurt is surprised and put on the spot, tells Mercedes he’s been in love with Rachel for years. Mercedes is angry and hurt, breaking into a rendition of “I bust the windows out your car,” but in reality, broke Kurt’s windshield.
Dakota is hired, and passes out menus letting the members know what they can and can’t eat. He then kicks the wheelchair bound Artie out of the group, along with Mercedes. He then begins insulting the members, and they get angry, arguing with him. Dakota insists that he is simply telling them the truth, and that in order to succeed they need him. Finn quits, along with Artie and Mercedes, and begin to walk out the door, but Rachel stands up Dakota and fires him.
The acafellas, with their two younger additions, Noah and Finn, put on their peformance for the PTA event, and it went splendidly. In the audience, Terri notices Emmas enthusiasm for the show and looks worried. The “connection” Sandy had, shows up with a body guard, tells the group they had a great show, and then serves sandy with a restraining order. Terri tells Schuester how great she thought he did. Meanwhile the “connection,” is getting Schuester’s mother drunk backstage, while Schuester’s father tells him that he has decided to go to law school.
Mercedes apologizes to Kurt and offers to pay for the damage to his car. Kurt admits that he lied about liking rachel and admits to Mercedes that he’s gay. He tells her the reason he lied, is because he had never told anyone before. She encourages him to be honest with people, but he walks away saying he just isn’t that confident.
The cheerleaders update Sue, and she is disappointed with the news they bring of the Glee club firing Dakota, and revokes the two girls tanning privileges. Quinn thanks Sue for teaching her a valuable lesson; “When you really believe in yourself, you don’t have to bring other people down.”
Schuester returns to the Glee club, working on the choreography, to all the member’s enthusiasm and approval.
