Glee Season 2 Episode 5 comes just in time tonight. Not only is Glee Season 2 Episode 5 unveiling the highly anticipated Rocky Horror Glee Show, it comes after a rather rough week for the series. Although the show took a week off because of baseball, it was still on everyone’s lips, but for all the wrong reasons. Due to a controversial GQ photo shoot, the show’s young stars – particularly Lea Michele and Dianna Agron – were accused of being in borderline pedophilia. Yet Glee is now set to show them, and the rest of the cast, in far wilder outfits.
In a year that has already seen a Britney Spears tribute and an emotional brush with death and religion, the show is going back to the tribute well. Since it is almost Halloween, and since it is the 35th anniversary of the Rocky Horror Picture Show, the club is now paying homage to the biggest cult movie of all time.
Glee Season 2 Episode 5 unveils the Rocky Horror Glee Show, as Will puts together the parody to impress Rocky Horror fan Emma. However, her dentist boyfriend also takes part as well, while Sue has her usual objections and schemes.
At the least, the Rocky Horror episode will actually get people talking about the show again, instead of GQ photo shoots based on the show. The controversy over Michele and Agron’s lack of clothes for GQ is dying down a bit after a week of fury. Having the club cause a spectacle on TV again should help speed up the process.
Still, the outrage over the GQ photo shoot is the latest example of backlash over the show. Since the series is already overexposed and heavily hyped, people are looking for any excuse to take it down. And since this episode is another mega-hyped tribute outing, those who hate these kinds of episodes will be sharpening their knives.
Last year, the series was the next big thing, and now it has a massive bullseye on its back. It has had a hard time not being the TV underdog anymore, both on and off screen. But The Rocky Horror Glee Show may serve as a relief, since it pays homage to another musical phenomenon that everyone sings along to constantly.
Of course, Rocky Horror has been around for 35 years, and millions around the world have already honored it in every way possible. Glee may only be a drop in the bucket of Rocky Horror history, although it is major for Glee history.
After honoring individuals like Madonna, Britney and Lady Gaga, the series is doing its first extended movie parody. Will it help make Glee Season 2 overshadow the off-stage headlines and backlash again? Fans and foes will find out tonight at 8 pm est on FOX.
