Glee Season 2 Episode 7 brought in a lot of substitutes. Of course, Glee Season 2 Episode 7 had one major substitute in Gwyneth Paltrow, as she continued her resurgence and her newfound singing career. After performing at the CMA awards to promote her new country-music-centric film, Paltrow took a run at singing a few other genres. However, although this substitute got the New Directions fired up, the absence of Will’s typical restraint caused some harm as well. But Episode 7 had some other downsides to substitutes as well.
Warning: Spoilers follow
The ultimate nightmare for McKinley High finally happened, as Sue wormed her way into the ultimate position of power – acting principal. As an added bonus, her plot managed to get Will sick, causing him to miss class – and to get cared for by none other than Terri.
As such, the first substitute in Glee Season 2 Episode 7 charged in, in the form of Paltrow’s Holly Holiday. Her teaching style proved to be far more laid back than Will’s, which immediately got her embraced by the club – and even by Rachel eventually.
Last week, everyone tuned into the CMAs to see if Paltrow could sing country. For her latest performances, she took on a censored version of Cee Lo Green’s new hit song, the ending of Chicago, and a mash-up of Singing In The Rain and Rihanna’s “Umbrella.” Although this proved more diverse – and current – than Will’s usual set list, the lack of restraint proved damaging in other areas.
In the meantime, Glee showed substitute Principal Sue setting up her new dictatorship. Since she couldn’t disband football, she settled for banning fatty foods and tots as her first pet cause. But since tots served as Mercedes’ substitute for the newly distant Kurt, this got her on the warpath.
After last week’s drama and eye-opening confrontations, this was the designated week for the show to get back to its flashy side. In this case, they set up an arc for a big guest star, got Sue in a new position to raise hell, let fans boo Terri all over again – and even made fun of their fixation on Journey. However, the lingering effects of last week’s revelations are still very serious.
Since Episode 7 served as a lighter outing, the show’s pattern suggests a darker one next week. However, according to the promos, the stunts will continue next Tuesday, with Carol Burnett and at least one wedding in the mix.
