Much have been written and said regarding Mr. Beck’s wish to hold a rally near the same place of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech. In my humble opinion, Mr. Beck has as much right to hold his rally there as those who wish to build a Community Center with a place for Muslim prayer does in New York near Ground Zero. His rights and the rights of anyone should never be trampled on. If Mr. Beck wishes to hold his rally in the lap of the Lincoln statue itself then he should be allowed to do so as long as the rally meets all governmental regulations and is legal from all aspects. We all have that right and no one’s should ever be abridged.
While I do not question his right to conduct this rally, I do question his motives behind it. The question is not about whether he wishes to be in the league of U.S. Presidents, Jim Jones or the Prophet Mohammad, it’s whether or not the proceeds really will go where they are advertised to go and I do not think that this question has not been addressed by many of the main stream media. “ABC’s Claire Shipman is one of many journalists who have reported on the criticism of Beck holding his “Restoring Honor” rally on the anniversary of the King speech.” “Beck says the timing is coincidental.” “Beck, along with his radio cohorts, took issue with a few parts of Shipman’s report, including her saying that it “wasn’t so long ago” that Beck called President Obama “a racist” on Fox News.” “Beck, who has criticized the rally backlash, was also bothered by ABC quoting him as saying that “blacks don’t own Martin Luther King.” Beck says ABC edited the quote selectively, failing to mention he also said that “whites don’t own Abraham Lincoln” and that both men are “American icons.”
(Calderone, Michael; 8/27/2010, The Upshot, Glenn Beck compares ABC report to Nazi propaganda, Retrieved from firstname.lastname@example.org).
Is it really important that Mr. Beck believes that this President has a “deep-seated hatred of white people, or the white culture”. Not really unless you consider him some sort of guru or sage and wish to believe that this President hates his own mother and grandparents. Whether you wish to believe that or not, this nation requires proof and none has ever been provided to support this belief. Is it really important that Mr. Beck consciously choose this day and this site to have his rally? No not really because Mr. Beck (nor anyone else) is Martin Luther King Jr. and nothing that he will ever do or say will ever take away from what Dr. King accomplished. To allow that to happen is less of a reflection on Mr. Beck and more of a reflection on the rest of us.
They say that this rally is a “non-political, non-partisan rally that will recognize our First Amendment rights and honor the service members who fight to protect those freedoms.” (Unknown Author, Restoring Honor Rally Supports SOWF, Retrieved from www.specialops.org). As a former U.S. Marine, I am grateful to anyone who is willing to donate some of their time and effort to help assist my fellow military members and their families in any way that they can. I question Mr. Beck motives mainly because the Special Operation Warriors Foundation dispatches well needed funds directly to wounded servicemen/women’s families so that they can afford to be by the bed side of their loved ones immediately and it appears that before this organization will get a dime, the money must be used first to pay for this event. “The purchase of Restoring Honor Rally merchandise is not a donation to SOWF, but all net proceeds from the sale of Restoring Honor Rally merchandise is being donated to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation. All contributions made to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF) will first be applied to the costs of the Restoring Honor Rally taking place on August 28, 2010.” “All contributions in excess of these costs will then be retained by the SOWF.” (Unknown Author, Glenn Beck, Retrieved from www.glennbeck.com/828). I’m sorry but that does not sound like donating one’s time and effort. To me it would appear that Mr. Beck and all those who will appear should be appearing “pro bono” or free of charge. All costs associated with this event should be paid for by Mr. Beck or those who wish to be seen and heard at this rally. Another cause of concern is that on the website you are allowed to donate online but they also give you the chance of donating through the mail. They ask that all checks be made out to SOWF and sent to New York via Mercury Radio Arts. “Mercury Radio Arts is the multimedia production company owned by Glenn Beck.” (Unknown Author, Mercury Radio Arts, Retrieved from www.wikipedia.org). Why not an independent accounting firm, surely those appearing and Mr. Beck could afford that.
My only wish is that someone makes damn sure that the cost of this rally does not suck up every single dime made from this rally and that the money really does go to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation where it is advertised to go. I ask that someone makes sure that the people counting the money really do know how to count. I would hate to think that we were all so slow as to allow anyone to use the lives and sacrifices of my fellow military members for selfish reasons. The true patriots are not those who stand on stage and declare it, but those who donned the uniform and do it.
