The Glenn Beck rally promises that it is restoring honor. Yet Glenn Beck rally critics warn that restoring honor is the last thing the Glenn Beck rally will achieve. Nevertheless, for all of the anger and the protests on both sides, it has not stopped the big event from happening. In fact, the most divisive gathering of the year is starting right now, and will go on restoring or destroying honor for the next few hours. After all the hype about the Glenn Beck rally, the day of reckoning is finally at hand.
Beck has waited for this day, and made sure his followers circled it on their calendars, for months. On the opposite end, opposition forces have been gnashing their teeth for months, in part because of the date. Many couldn’t believe that this would happen on the date and location of the “I Have A Dream” speech.
Nevertheless, the Glenn Beck rally is starting right now, on the Lincoln Memorial, two steps down from Dr. Martin Luther King’s civil rights landmark. The ‘Restoring Honor’ gathering began at 10 am est, and is scheduled to go on until 1 pm, with live streaming on Facebook.
Tea Party activists, anti-Obama protestors, Sarah Palin, and Beck himself are restoring honor this morning. As such, left wing activists expect the Glenn Beck rally to be the most offensive, racist, anti-American gathering in a long time. They have had a field day bashing right wing/Tea Party rallies before, so this one would have to be pretty ugly to top that for them.
But given all the controversy and fervor around the Glenn Beck rally, anything less might be disappointing to the left – and maybe even the right. The GOP is divided on whether this will help or hurt them in November, while the Tea Party crowd hopes to become a greater force from it. There are all kinds of predictions on what might happen, but in the next few hours, these questions will actually be answered.
Whether or not the event succeeds in restoring honor – or destroying it – likely depends on Beck’s long anticipated speech. Whenever he speaks, he manages to rile up both sides of the culture war in different ways. But he has set the bar so high/low in the past, and hyped today up so heavily, that this speech must do a lot to stand out.
Comparing the Glenn Beck rally alongside Martin Luther King has drawn a lot of anger already. Yet when Dr. King was the centerpiece of his own rally, he took advantage and rallied his supporters to change the country, in spite of the opposition.
In his own way, Beck wants to do the same, although his methods of restoring honor are very different from Dr. King’s. Many doubt that the Glenn Beck rally will have the same payoff, but in a few hours, the first signs of his success or failure will finally be unveiled.
