One of the negative fall-outs of globalization has been that greed has enveloped even communist countries! The world has become the oyster, so everyone feels the sky is the limit! No one has exploited this opportunity better than China, with others going broke and then bonkers over this issue! It is like the Olympic Games, with medals awarded only to the winners.
But the negative fall-outs are becoming more pronounced with all in a race, to outdo each other. Whoever can produce cheapest, walks away with the spoils; after all, who wants to pay more? America & Europe got a foretaste from the Japanese with their sleek cars and electronic gadgets and then it is China’s turn for now. The wolves are already in; so no point in locking the doors!
The worst casualty is nature, with relentless exploitation of its resources that have been accumulated over billions of years! As none wants to be left behind from getting the best of everything, and with more and more able to afford them, we could just see a mad rush, unless better realization of the consequences prevails. Are we not taking an easy approach, forgetting the needs of tomorrow, just to satiate our greed for today? Are we not leaving a more bankrupt world to future generations, for them to pick-up the pieces and pay a higher price in the bargain? Are we not robbing them by our indulgence of today?
Earlier times, the greed was restricted to societies and countries. Now it is across the whole frontier. China has purchased resources every where, with their massive reserves. Some last bastions are being defended, but sure to fall one by one! Even mighty financial institutions need saviors; who else than those with the muscle? Many countries were happy with little, finding solace and meaning to their lives within families and societies. Now, those are under threat, as their leaders are enticed with money and promise to sign away their wealth. By logic and fair-play, the resources should belong to the people. Now, it is taken away from them in the name of globalization.
Are we not putting the cart before the horse? If the exploitation of resources is unsustainable, should we not reassess and refocus on the priorities? Is it not unlike what brought in the financial crisis; spending beyond our means? At least, in that case, money can be printed to get out the mess; but if over-exploitation of resources continues at this rate, we will leave nothing for future generations, except a deep mess and a bottomless hole. Who is responsible for the mess? Did we not get a world to live comfortably, backed by scientific progress to build further? But our effort fails woefully; we are aware of the facts, but not willing to make some needed sacrifices.
Greed has definitely overtaken reason with no moral uprightness to do what is right. We live for today, without a thought for tomorrow. We rape mother earth like never before! We search every nook and corner, enticing even those who live within their means with glitz and glamour to wean them away to a life of debauchery & excess. The cancer is spreading, bankrupting the moral fiber of societies everywhere.
There are ways for progress with sustainability, but they call for some pain and sacrifice. Though expensive initially, we have to switch to renewable sources for energy, better management of water resources, become less dependent on fossil fuels. The culture of scientific pursuit has been replaced by mindless speculation with a casino mentality inbred from young; the hard work ingrained in us has given way to a life of leisure. The strains are already showing increasingly due to this lifestyle, but we refuse to see reason and change direction; addicted as are, and as we believe that our slowing down will not make much of a difference. We lack the trust and unity of purpose to focus on the problems as one, to find needed solutions. The benefits of globalization are being hijacked by the day and the negatives are becoming more apparent!
