I decided to find out if gluten free pizza could actually taste good, so I went to Whole Foods and was dismayed to find that Amy’s gluten free pizza contained added soy. Lately, soy has received a very bad rap, and for good reason. Thus, many people who adhere to a gluten free diet won’t touch any foods that contain soy, especially since a gluten-intolerant person may also have soy intolerance.
Glutino offers a “Duo Cheese” pizza that has no added soy. I say “no added” because there is no soy in the list of ingredients. However, a disclaimer says: May contain traces of soy. This suggests that Glutino pizza is prepared in a facility that also prepares wheat-based products, and thus, cross-contamination is possible.
It’s very difficult to find a gluten free pizza at the store that doesn’t have added soy, but there’s a big difference between the deliberate inclusion of soy, and a “may contain traces of soy” disclaimer.
So how does Glutino duo cheese gluten free pizza taste? Delicious! I was very surprised, because I kind of thought that gluten free foods were bland. If I had not known that Glutino’s pizza was gluten free, I would have never detected anything different. It tastes like a pure pizza all the way.
The only caveat about this product is that the crust is dismally thin. Now, some people like a thin crust. I like a thick crust. But as far as taste, the Glutino crust was very tasty, and this includes the parts of it that didn’t have the cheese and tomato paste on it. The cheese and tomato paste do not extend all the way out to the perimeter of the crust. The crust-only perimeter is about an inch, and if you love bread, you’ll enjoy this part of the product.
For those of you who are very conscious about food ingredients, Glutino gluten free duo cheese pizza contains modified corn starch, sugar, sodium bicarbonate, sodium alginate, modified cellulose and “spices.” Who knows what “spices” actually are. The product also contains “glucono-delta-lactone.”
Of course, this is frozen food in a box; a processed item that comes frozen in a box will almost always contain questionable ingredients. Glutino gluten free pizza doesn’t come bare in the box, however; the product is contained in plastic.
The product has 420 calories, 12 grams fat of which 5 grams are saturated, 68 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of dietary fiber and 10 grams of protein.
If you’re on a gluten free diet, give this Glutino duo cheese pizza to your non-food-allergenic friends, but don’t tell them it’s gluten free, and see how they like it.
