About eleven years ago, a friend introduced me to a little book titled “God Calling.” It’s a daily devotional book, in paperback form, with little messages meant to encourage and inspire the reader. The book was “written” by or “told to” Two Listeners and edited by A.J. Russell. The journey began for the Two Listeners in December of 1932. Needless to say, this little book has been around for some time.
When I opened up my first copy-I’ve had numerous copies over the last eleven years, as I always seem to be giving mine to someone who needs just such a blessing-I read the entire book from front to back in one night. I couldn’t put it down.
To say that I was intrigued would be a gross understatement. I was drawn in and completely enraptured with each message. As I read on through the night, I began to see a Jesus that I’d never known before. I fell more and more in love with the Jesus that I had come to know. By the time I’d read through to the end of this book, I hungered for a deeper and more personal relationship with the Lord. “God Calling” showed me that I could have that kind of relationship with Him.
I still read daily from my little book today. I began to journal on each message after my daily devotion. I’ve found that, not only has my relationship with the Lord grown, but the Lord has shown me some wonders in His Word. This book has helped me to see God’s Word in a new light; the scriptures truly have been opened up to me with the help of this wonderful little book.
After eleven years I’m still awestruck by some of the messages, still encouraged each time I pick this book up, and there’s not been once that I’ve opened this little book and not been refreshed, invigorated in spirit, and profoundly impressed with its message. I told someone once that I sometimes felt as if God were speaking directly to me through this book, because it seems no matter what’s going on or what my need or concern may be the daily message always seems to address the situation or need.
Of course, “God Calling” doesn’t in any way take the place of The Bible; but it is an incredibly thought provoking, deeply touching, and truly inspirational companion to God’s Word. I would recommend this book to all my friends. To anyone who wants to get to know Jesus a little better, to anyone seeking a little enlightenment, to anyone who could use a little encouragement, I say, “Pick up a copy .” You’ll be glad you did.
Be forewarned; you’ll find yourself buying more copies so you can share with family and friends.
