What makes catching a salmon so great? I muttered these words under my breath one day while my husband was raving about the salmon. After all, they were big, and they were pretty. Freezing and canning preserve them safely for future meals. The variety of recipes is endless. One cannot ruin salmon. Oh, yes, they are high in Omega 3.
Perhaps I was not impressed about landing a salmon because they always skipped my line and chose anyone else’s line. Jealousy can certainly affect an attitude. At any rate, I found myself scheduled for a trip to Alaska, both to visit relatives and to catch salmon. The salmon were running! I learned this lesson: Salmon up to that point skipped my line because they were ashamed to not be big, fighting Alaskan salmon. They let me have the oppportunity of catching the very best off the Kenai River in Alaska.
Here are three haikus which I believe summarize this event.
Beloved Husband who Always gets his limit
I do love my wife
Don’t take the fish on purpose
She should get her share
Green-eyed Jealous Wife who really has brown eyes and feels lucky to even get a bite
If you do love me
Make the fish stop at my line
not just pass on by.
Alaskan brown bears who just love salmon
We are born to fish.
Lines, lures, and bait: Who needs them?
Bears catch salmon with claws.
In summary, what a wonderful time. The river was thick with salmon, more than I could imagine. Everywhere we traveled, people discussed the great run. I will never forget it, or feel badly if the fish pass me by again. I’ve had my day (s), which cannot be surpassed.
This is dedicated to Bernice “Bea” Harris, who braved Alaska and thrived until God called her home. I miss you, and bet you are growing some kingsized crops in Heaven!
