This political season there has been a lot of criticism of government spending. However, let’s not forget that some government spending is still good. For example, I was at the Bernal Height Library, and right at the front entrance are two advertisements, one for a writing class and one for a film presentation. On the film presentation, the library works with the Bernal Heights Outdoor Cinema group. These activities will take place at the library, giving neighbors a chance to get to know each other, and emerging writers and filmmakers a chance to present to a live audience.
Neither activity cost a lot of government money, but does require some support. There are hundreds of small activities around the city that take place at libraries and park and recreation facilities. They generally do not cost a lot of government money, and have immense benefits for the local community. Library hours and this type of activity are getting squeezed when the city’s budget is impacted.
