Lyndhurst is one of the biggest towns in the New Forest , and for many visitors is the gateway into the national park. It is a favorite destination for my family, but we’ve always encountered one problem. Although there are some great restaurants in the area for nice dates, there’s always been a lack of places for our family to stop and eat, or for a more casual lunch date.
Luckily we recently discovered a fantastic new place in Lyndhurst: Good Food Cafe. The Good Food Cafe is located on the High Street in central Lyndhurst, so it is easy to reach on foot (there is nearby parking in the main Lyndhurst car park between the New Forest Visitor’s Centre and the Lyndhurst Public Library).
The cafe has an instant charm. There’s nothing pretentious or overly fancy about it. It looks like a good cafe or tea house. The inside has a “shabby chic” decoration theme that reminded me of Cath Kidston . The tables all had different tablecloths, the furniture didn’t match, and the dishes were mis-matched. But it was adorable. It was like walking into an oversized version of the cozy country dining room that most of us would love to have.
Speaking of the decor, I really liked that the walls were decorated by beautiful photography (in cool frames too–I particularly liked the use of old windows as picture frames) by a local photographer. It added a great sense of community to the cafe, as well as looking great. The overall atmosphere was so good, and the service so friendly, that I was willing to overlook the fact that literally half of the light bulbs in the room were burnt out (there was still plenty of light).
It was such an inviting place that there was a diverse group of people dining and chatting in the cafe, including young families, couples, and groups of pensioners. It has a universal appeal.
Good Food Cafe’s Menu has your standard coffee shop items: tea, hot chocolate (I enjoyed a mug on an overcast day), coffee, scones & biscotti, etc. However, they also have a surprisingly good food menu (including breakfast and lunch options). I especially loved the goat’s cheese and walnut salad that I had. It was absolutely delicious. The other dishes that we have had there have all been good as well.
Unlike many cafes or coffee shops, Good Food cooks all of their food fresh. They also use local ingredients when possible. These dishes are not gourmet, but they are delicious and use good ingredients.
Good Food Cafe also offers special events, hosts kids parties, and has a catering service.
