FaceBook provides a place for users to go in order to connect with other people. It is a wonderful venue but at times it can get out of hand. Consider carefully the reasons that you joined FaceBook to start with. There may come a time that you should consider deleting your FaceBook account altogether. Recognizing when things are getting out of hand with FaceBook is a good time to reconsider having an account with them at all.
When you should consider deleting your FaceBook Profile
Being Harassed- If you are being harassed by someone and they find a way to get onto your FaceBook friends list no matter what you do, it may be time to consider deleting your profile. It isn’t worth all the hassles that you go through in order to stay on FaceBook in these situations. If you have to, come back under an assumed name and get rid of the old profile so that the person can’t figure out who you are.
No Longer in Use- If you haven’t used FaceBook in a long time, it is probably better to just delete the profile so that it can’t come back to haunt you in the future. We often join internet groups and then wander away from it after a while. If you have had this happen with your FaceBook account, you may have even forgotten that it exists. Go back to those pages and delete your FaceBook profile so it will no longer exist when people look it up.
Seeking Employment- If you are seeking employment and you have used FaceBook in anyway that might reflect poorly on you to potential employers, it is best to delete the profile so that you won’t have any problems in that keeping you from getting the job. Potential employers seek out social networking sites to see what your character is like. If they don’t like what they see, they can easily pass you over for the job.
Leaving the Internet- If you are going to try to make a go of getting off the internet for good, make sure that you delete your FaceBook and other social networking accounts first. There are various reasons for this, but mainly because as the site changes, so could the things that you thought were private. For instance, MySpace decided to make all blogs public, even those that you thought were previously private. That means that anyone can read that information even if it wasn’t intended for everyone to read. That can happen without any notification to you. Don’t leave the internet without taking as much of your fingerprint off of it as possible. It could save you a lot of heartache in the end.
Having a FaceBook profile is great if you use it for the right purposes. If you find that it is no longer suitable for you, you can easily remove your presence from that website. You can always re-establish an account later if you so choose. There is sometimes no point in keeping a profile hanging out in internet space so don’t hesitate to delete it if any of the above is true for you.
