The first two episodes of season 6 of the hit show Criminal Minds have been quite the roller coaster. Not only were the serial killers the team hunted quite inventive in their motives and tactics but there was also the departure of a beloved cast member. J.J. also known as, Jennifer Jareau, has moved on from the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) to move on to better career opportunities. Despite her superiors trying to keep her around in the storyline it appeared to be above their heads in the chain of command. Fans waited all summer to see what was going to happen to the beautiful and talented public relations specialist on the show. She will be missed, but will she be back?
It became clear during the season last year that AJ Cook, the actress that plays JJ in Criminal Minds, may not be returning for the next season. According to Buddy TV CBS did not wish to renew Cook’s contract. Upon hearing this news fans began a petition hoping to change the mind of the higher authorities in the decision making committee of CBS. More than 43,000 signatures were gathered in just a short time but it wasn’t enough to bring the star back for an entire season. In June it became apparent that Cook would be back for the first two episodes of the new season to end her story line on the show and say her final farewells.
Episode three of the show aired earlier this week and it was clear that JJ is a missed character. In one scene Penelope removes Jennifer Jareau’s name plate from what used to be her office. The show continued with a thrilling case about a serial killer with Alzheimer’s disease. The case was interesting and it played particularly on Rossi because this was a killer he had been trying to catch for quite some time. If is wasn’t for the tragic scene of removing JJ’s office nameplate it may have slipped my mind that she wasn’t in the show. The writers did an excellent job of keeping the viewers occupied enough not to dwell on missing one of their favorite characters. It will be difficult to see if all the episodes can be as well written and whether viewers will be lost due to the removal of AJ Cook’s role on Criminal Minds.
One piece of optimism in this situation is the way in which ‘JJ’ left the show. She simply moved to a different department or job, she wasn’t killed off as so many others are. This leaves the possibility open for a guest appearance or even for her to return to the show. AJ Cook is busy with the filming of Mother’s Day according to IMDB. Perhaps the star has left the show to work on becoming a more well-known actress in a variety of films and roles. It isn’t certain whether we’ve seen the last of Jennifer Jareau.
