The Gowanus Music Club was founded to fill the gap left by the cuts in public school arts programs. It offers children aged 8 to 16 an opportunity to learn music on their chosen instrument with emphasis on ear training, recognizing chords, harmony and rhythm plus workshops in composition and digital music production.
A special, intensive 5 day ‘Rock Camp’ offers an immersion into all aspects of performing and studio production. Students are organized into bands of specific genres according to their interests and learn how to memorize their individual parts, perform with a group and record on a multi-track studio. This gives students the opportunity to gain confidence through collaborating with others to create a unique sound of their own.
Executive director Josh Margolis and artistic director Tracy Bonham are professional musicians from a diverse background who want to provide children with the support and guidance they require to develop as well-rounded performers who have the confidence to perform in a variety of group situations. Bonham said, “As kids, we were lucky enough to have great musical mentors. Now, we want to mentor so that the younger generations can benefit in the same ways we did.”
