Baby swings have really evolved! When my 28 year old daughter was a baby, her swing was a wind up version, and it would only swing for ten or fifteen minutes before it ran out of “crank power”. When I went shopping with my daughter to look for baby swings for her newborn, I was almost overwhelmed by the choices available to mothers today.
Not only are there a wide variety of styles and brands to choose from, but the prices really shocked me! The swing that we ended up purchasing, the Graco Lovin’ Hug Swing Olivia, was found at the Worthington Coat Factory, who happen to have a large baby department.
Our baby is five weeks old, and she loves this swing! It retailed for $110, but it has been worth every penny. When I compare it to the swing I used years ago, this Graco Lovin’ Hug Swing Olivia really shines. Not only does it have six different swing speeds, it also has music, nature sounds, and two different soothing vibration modes.
When placed in this swing a baby will recline slightly (there are four reclining positions), and there are safety straps to help keep them secured. A tray also comes with the swing, but we won’t use this feature until she is a bit older. The seat is nicely padded with a flowered print in shades of pink and rose, with dark brown accents. The seat is machine washable too, a big plus! There is also an infant head support that can be removed as your baby grows out of the infant stage. Our baby is five weeks old the fit is starting to get a little tight, so we may have to remove this in the next few weeks.
The swing has six different speeds, which I thought was over kill when we brought it home, but you need to use the higher speeds as your baby puts on pounds, otherwise the swing won’t move. Even allowing a blanket to hang down over the front of the swing can affect the speed.
If swinging doesn’t pacify our baby, sometimes using the soothing vibration mode does. There are two speeds available, but we hardly notice any vibration on the low speed so we use the higher level. As if that weren’t enough, the Graco Lovin’ Hug Swing Olivia also provides soothing music for baby! There are 15 songs and nature sounds to choose from, many of the songs are classical style. The sounds are soothing nature sounds such as waterfalls, birds chirping, a bubbling brook, etc. The swing also has a volume control. I find it soothing myself listening to the music this swing provides! My granddaughter will often look up at the source of the music and just stare at it for long periods of time.
The Graco Lovin’ Hug Swing Olivia takes up a large footprint in our living room. It measures 40 1/12″ high, 27″ wide, and 34 1/2″ deep. It weighs about 16 pounds, and is easy to set up and move from room to room. It does take three D size batteries, but we have found these last for a long time. We have been using this swing on a daily basis for three weeks, and it is still going strong. To help get the most out of our batteries, there is a timer that allows the swing to run for half an hour, the it stops on its own.
The Graco Lovin’ Hug Swing Olivia can be used on children up to 30 pounds. My daughter was given a hand me down swing when her baby was born, and it appears that the previous owners put their son in the swing when he exceeded the weight limits, and this bent the frame so that the swing is not usable. I highly recommend you follow the manufacturers instructions for weight limits.
Having the Graco Lovin’ Hug Swing Olivia at our disposal has been a blessing. When we place our baby in this swing it usually lulls her to sleep. The “mobile” that attaches to the top is not a big benefit, in my opinion. It is pretty high up and it isn’t motorized so it won’t move on its own. Still, our baby sometimes does sit in this swing and look up at the mobile, which consists of three padded fabric flowers.
When our baby is fussy from being over tired, the swing usually lulls her to sleep, and she will remain asleep in this swing during an entire nap time. Right now she has a cold, so it’s nice to have a more upright position to allow her to sleep in, as she breathes better.
Overall, I give the Graco Lovin’ Hug Swing Olivia high marks for performance, and am glad to recommend it.
