Christmas is quickly approaching, and you’re going through your Christmas present list. If you’re stuck on what to give a two-year-old relative or family friend, here are some great ideas to get you started. I’ve provided a range of educational and just plain fun toys, and included both cheaper and more expensive options. As the mother of a two-year-old I can guarantee that these are all gifts that my toddler would love.
I always think that home-made presents are some of the best because they show the love and effort that was put into them. Making home-made presents isn’t practical for everyone, but if you have the time, they can make a great present that the child will treasure for years to come. Some home-made gift ideas include making a toy (can you make wooden toys or crochet little bears? Use the skills you have.) or making a blanket (two-year-old’s often don’t have their baby blankets anymore, but will still love a small blanket that they can carry around and snuggle).
Give an Activity Together
Two-year-old’s want love and attention. Especially if you are a parent or other relative who doesn’t normally get to spend as much time with them as you would like, then giving the gift of time can make a great present. Consider giving them tickets to a fun, age appropriate activity. For example, the child could unwrap a toy animal with tickets to the zoo. It doesn’t have to be an expensive activity, just something that your child will enjoy and where the two of you can really interact. It can be as simple as some good picture books that you read to them regularly.
TV Show Gifts
By two, most children develop a favorite TV show or film. In fact, they may want to watch the same TV show constantly, or ask to put on their favorite DVD over and over again. For my two-year-old, “Peppa Pig” is her absolute favorite. She loves anything with Peppa Pig on it. We recently gave her Peppa Pig rain boots, and she wears them all the time (it’s difficult trying to get her to take them off for bed or bath time). If your two-year-old has a definite favorite, then buy them a toy or other product. They will automatically love it because they already know and love the characters. Other popular TV shows among two-year-olds include: “Go Diego Go” and “Dora the Explorer”, “Little Einsteins”, “Handy Manny”, “Humf”, “Winnie the Pooh”, and “Sesame Street”.
Two-year-old’s are becoming more coordinated, and so they like active toys. My two-year-old, for example, has recently become very good at jumping (and actually lifting both feet off of the floor at once). For her, a trampoline is an incredibly exciting toy. Other active toys that toddlers love include tricycles or peddle-less bikes, Little Tykes Style big cars, rocking horses, and almost anything that they can push around (little wheelbarrows, baby doll prams, etc.).
Pay Attention to Your Two-Year-Old
There are toys that almost all two-year-old children enjoy (like toy cars, toy animals, and puzzles), but no child is exactly alike. Pay attention to the interests of your particular child. Do they love dressing up, or do they really love drawing and painting? Will they spend hours building with blocks or legos? Pay attention to the particular interests and abilities of your child.
