Halloween is always a fun holiday. What with all the goblins, ghosts, pumpkins and candy corn everyone has something to be amused by at this holiday. It is not a holiday usually associated with “green” save the planet activities, but why not start some new traditions this year?
There are plenty of ways to honor nature at Halloween. So be creative and think up your own ideas to be “green” at Halloween.
Give the Birds Halloween Treats
Make some special treats for the birds this Halloween season. You can feed them and decorate the yard at the same time. Get some twine or orange ribbon to make the treats. Then wrap it around slices of apples or oranges and make a knot to firmly hold the fruit in place.
Smear some peanut butter on the fruit to add a special touch. You could also sprinkle some sunflower seeds on top of the peanut butter.
Hang the bird treat from a tree branch. It will look pretty and be a delicious treat for the birds too.
You could also hang a whole apple from twine or make an entire wreath from slices of fruits tied around a foam or wood wreath base. Then hang the wreath from a tree branch and enjoy watching the birds sit on it to eat.
Give out “Green” Halloween Treats of Acorns & Tree Seeds
It doesn’t cost much to give out green treats to help the environment. Just go to the dollar store and get some Halloween bags or just regular paper bags. Fill them with acorns or tree seeds. Give out these treats to encourage people to plant trees to help the environment.
This is a fun way to spread the word of gathering seeds in nature and growing trees. Kids love to watch a tree they planted from an acorn or seed spring into life.
If you don’t feel like collecting tree seeds you can buy them cheaply on EBAY.com or ETSY.com.
Give out “Green” Halloween Bags of Flower Seeds
Most people love flowers. Thus a Halloween bag full of flower seeds to plant in the spring would be a special treat indeed. You can either gather seeds in the fall from your garden or buy commercial packets of seeds at the gardening store or places like Kmart.
Put the seeds in a Halloween bag to hand out on the holiday. This treat will bring smiles to anyone who loves to garden.
Fill Fake Pumpkins with Flower Bulbs
A Halloween treat of a small fake pumpkin filled with flower bulbs is a cute treat. Use index cards and a hole punch to make little cards with the name of the flower that will grow from the bulb. Then tie the note to the pumpkin handle with twine or orange ribbon.
Put a few bulbs in the pumpkin and you have created an adorable Halloween treat. And then next year the little fake pumpkin can be used for home décor or to hold Halloween candy.
Give out Tree Seedlings for Halloween
Websites like ArborDay.org sell a wide variety of tree seedlings at reasonable prices. It is a cute idea to wrap up a tree seedling in a Halloween bag, or just tie an orange ribbon on the seedling.
Give kids the joy of planting his or her own tree the morning after Halloween. This is a Halloween treat that will give decades of enjoyment and help the environment too.
