Residents of Clinton Hill and Fort Greene have been quietly conspiring for quite some time to bring a Food coop to the neighborhood modeled after the legendary Park Slope Coop, and with the signing of a lease for a store front on Putnam Ave, realization of this dream is nearly at hand.
The Greenhill organizers met with property owners on Sept 13th to sign the lease and pay the first months rent, reported The Local, and it seems everybody is happy with the location
Organizers indicate that the property will meet all of their needs and even neighboring businesses say they are pleased with the prospect of Greenhill setting up shop on the block.
The organizers of Greenhill have been accepting member payments since May, but now the store opening is on the horizon and enthusiasm is high.
No date has been giving for the store opening, but work is under way. The next general meeting is set for October 14th (see website for details).
The goal of the Greenhill coop is to be a “100% working, member-owned food coop to provide affordable, quality, responsibly-grown food” to the Clinton Hill and Fort Greene neighborhoods.
But the store isn’t only about good food on the cheap. Its also about establishing, celebrating and serving a diverse community. And we say “establishing” because that is what the coop will effectively do by creating a members only store that requires engagement from those who want to partake of the benefits.
So foodies of Clinton Hill and surrounding neighborhoods unite!
Soon you will have the Mecca for which you have yearned so long.
