In many ways, the Facebook game Mafia Wars is a game without a goal. There is no completion to the game and it is possible to perform the same activities infinitely. The only true limitations or end states in the game come from memory limitations. While no true goals exist, there are plenty of specific goals that are rewarded in various ones. One of the most obvious of these specific goals is the attainment of achievements. Zynga is always adding additional achievements to the game and the game currently has over one hundred. The first achievements you are likely to encounter are the New York achievements. If you are having difficulty attaining these 17 achievements, this guide will help you get them all.
One Down / What Else You Got? – These two achievements are earned by mastering stages in New York. The first one, “One Down”, requires that you master only a single stage, while the latter requires you master all 9 stages. In order to master a stage you need to get at least 100% mastery for level 1 of every single job in the stage and you need to defeat the boss of the stage if there is one. The second and third levels do not matter for obtaining this achievement. The easiest way to do this is to invest heavily in energy and complete jobs using your energy. It will take some time and the only easy ways to decrease this time are to invest additional attribute points in energy and to use energy packs gifted to you by your friends.
Armed and Dangerous / Personal Fleet – These two achievements are earned by obtaining items that can be purchased in New York. The first requires that you obtain at least 10 Tommy Guns and the second requires that you obtain at least 500 Town Cars. It doesn’t matter how you obtain these items. You can purchase them or they can be gifted to you. Either way, simply possession is enough to get the achievements. The Tommy Guns will cost a total of $200,000, which you should easily acquire by completing missions. The Town Cars will cost a total of $100 million. This will take weeks if not months to earn. It is better to save this achievement for later, rather than attain it as soon as your can afford it. You will need that money to help you get other, harder to obtain achievements.
Collector / Curator – These two achievements are earned by vaulting New York collections. The first requires that you vault a single collection and the second requires that you vault 9 different collections. Vaulting the same collection multiple times will not count extra towards attaining “Curator”. Vaulting collections requires gathering collection items which are found while completing missions. Each collection is associated with a single stage and you can only find items for that collection on that stage. Usually, if you master all three levels of a stage you will find all of the items necessary for a collection. Thus, these achievements are easy to get while completing “What Else You Got?”. If you don’t get all of the items for a stage either continue to complete the lowest energy cost job on the stage until you do, or play the Daily Chance and request a reward when you have only played one ticket. This will earn you a random collection item.
Knife Thrower / Uncle Sam – These two achievements are earned by obtaining loot items that drop on specific New York jobs. To get “Knife Thrower”, you need to get 10 Butterfly Knives. This loot drops on the Mugging job in the Associate stage. To get “Uncle Sam” you need 50 Federal Agents, which drop on the Buy Off a Federal Agent job on the Boss stage. It is also possible to find each of these loot items when you win a fight. The first one is very easy. The Mugging job only costs 2 points of energy to complete and you will earn a Butterfly Knife over half the time. The second is very difficult to achieve. In order to complete the job, you need to have the consumable item Set of Blackmail Photos. Each time you perform the job, you will expend that item and 31 points of energy. To get a Set of Blackmail Photos, you need to complete the Obtain Compromising Photos job on the Hitman stage and you only get the item slightly more than 50% of the time. Also, that job expends one Concealable Camera consumable item to complete. Finally, to get the Concealable Camera, you need to perform the Rob an Electronics Store job on the Enforcer stage, which has a one in three chance of dropping a Concealable Camera. On average, you will spend about 200 points of energy to get a Set of Blackmail Photos and that will only give you about a 5% chance of getting a Federal Agent. In total, expect to spend months getting this achievement and about 100,000 points of energy.
Slum Lord / Land Holder / Land Baron / Real Estate Tycoon – These four achievements are earned by buying properties. The first requires you purchase a level 30 Tenement. The second requires you own 1 of each property. The third and fourth require you upgrade all your properties, except for Louie’s Deli, the Chopshop, the Armory, and the Weapon Depot to levels 25 and levels 100 respectively. Buying and upgrading properties simply requires money. Since each property produces money, the simplest way to do this is to buy a few starting properties and then funnel the earned money into upgrades and purchases. It will take a few months, but you will eventually earn all four of these achievements.
The First is the Hardest / Personal Bailout / That’s With a “T” / Nest Egg / What’s After Trillion – Each of these achievements, except for the last one, require that you deposit a certain amount of money in the bank, after the 10% loss you take for making a deposit. The last achievement simply requires that you have as much money in the bank as the bank can hold ($999 Trillion). Since the bank takes a percentage when you deposit, the best way to try to get these is to simply earn money until you have enough for the last one. Then remove all your money from the bank and redeposit it. You will get any achievements in this list you don’t already have. To earn this much money, you need to buy and upgrade a Mega Casino property. At minimum, you need it to be level 100 and higher is better. Eventually the investment will be returned and these achievements take years to attain. Also, one job gives a lot of money and you will need to perform that job repeatedly. Due to the Old City Bonus, the Make Arrangements for a Visiting Don provides $240 million every time it is performed. You can earn roughly $1 billion dollars for roughly 150 points of energy. Simply based on this mission and your properties you should earn the first two achievements eventually, but the last three will require that you wait until you can get all of them at once.
