Is Gwyneth Paltrow Country Strong enough to be among country superstars? The Gwyneth Paltrow Country Strong song had already been released, but no one had seen her sing it before last night’s CMA awards. Although the likes of Miranda Lambert, Blake Shelton, Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood headlined the awards, one of the big stories of the show was a rookie. Moviegoers are bound to hear her sing several more times in the next month, and may actually go to hear her perform in theaters. But the first “Country Strong” performance was the biggest test, as she was among her new peers.
The CMA awards were an obvious forum for Paltrow to plug her new movie and sing the title song from it. She plays a washed up country star trying to rebuild her career, which is the kind of role that took Jeff Bridges to the top last year.
In this case, the Paltrow song is getting a more commercial opening. Although fans have heard her sing it already, they got to see if she could pull it off in a live forum. The anticipation for this performance was even bigger than those from the established CMA nominees.
Even beforehand, hosts Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood made jokes about her and her husband’s band. But she finally got to come on stage herself near the end, with help from Vince Gill. Many noted that she appeared nervous on stage, as was likely expected.
Yet by the end of the performance, she got a standing ovation from the crowd, although Gill helped prod them. But the night’s big winner, Miranda Lambert, didn’t appear to smile until she noticed the cameras on her.
Paltrow’s nerves may have been noticeable live, but her singing will likely look more confident in the movie. However, it will take another month to quell any nerve on the movie’s performance, once it comes out on Dec. 22.
The film is her first lead role in some time, as she tries to prove she is still a box office draw. In addition, her comeback is spreading to television, as she is also singing on Glee starting next week. For Gwyneth Paltrow, “Country Strong”is the title of a movie and a song, but she also hopes it will apply to her in the weeks ahead.
