According to CrimeMapping.com, there have been a steady number of arrests per month in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood for graffiti. However, graffiti art is not entirely discouraged by local business owners and residents. Haight Ashbury neighbors simply want to encourage graffiti artists to express themselves in designated areas around the neighborhood.
In the three months of August to October, 2010 there were35 graffiti related arrests made. At the end of October, a community wide effort planned a mural on the corner of Laguna and Haight. It will be interesting to see if the mural encourages graffiti artists to limit their artwork to designated areas.
In the meantime, the SFPD continue to work with local neighborhood organizations in the Haight to fund graffiti abatement projects. Considering the potential price tag a graffiti abatement program garners, a truce between the community and the graffiti artists could result in more mural canvases throughout the Haight Ashbury neighborhood.
