Families from Round Rock and surrounding central Texas cities flock to the Hairy Man Festival each fall for live entertainment, great food, and plenty of fall fun and games for all ages. This uniquely named event refers to the local legend of the Hairy Man. As legend tells, about two hundred years ago when Austin was just a fledgling town and Round Rock was simply a point that settlers passed through on their way out west, an old hermit terrorized the area that is now Brushy Creek by spooking horses and scaring people on their way through the area. One day, this hermit was killed after being run over by a carriage, and even today his spirit is said to haunt the area.
The Brushy Creek neighborhood and park lands today are very developed, but the legend of the Hairy Man lives on with the annual Hairy Man Festival. This annual event first began back in 1994 and is held each year at Cat Hollow Park near 8600 O’Connor Drive and RM 620 in western Round Rock. This festival is eagerly anticipated by many families each year and is typically held on one Saturday during the month of either September or October.
When you attend the event, you can expect to enjoy live musical performances throughout the day, mostly featuring locally recognized bands and musicians. There are plenty of special performances as well from local businesses, clubs, and organizations. Past years’ performances have included karate, dance, and singing demonstrations. In addition, there are dozens of booths featuring local arts and crafts vendors, food vendors, and more. You will also find children’s activities like bounce houses, face painting, hair spray-painting, a cake walk, a train ride, and much more. The highlight of the day, however, is always the Hairiest Man Contest. The winner of this contest typically wins several hundred dollars in cash and prizes.
This family-friendly event is an affordable and fun way to spend a beautiful fall day in Round Rock. Admission is $2 per person, or two non-perishable food items per person. The proceeds of this event benefit the Samaritan Health Ministries, the Round Rock Serving Center, St Vincent De Paul Catholic Church, and the Brushy Creek Utility Assistance Program. While the Hairy Man Festival is hosted in part by the Brushy Creek MUD, all are invited to attend the festivities and have great fall fun while benefiting these charities. Your whole family is sure to have fun at this year’s Hairy Man Festival!
