Halloween and trick or treating can be loads of fun, especially the candy, when you’re a kid. Unfortunately there are some sick individuals out there who take this opportunity to sabotage candy with horrible intentions as they hand it out to trick or treaters. As a parent, you have to get involved and if you can’t go trick or treating with your children and monitor the houses they visit, you must get to that goody bag and check each and every piece of candy thoroughly before its eaten.
First off, if something like this concerns you, its always a safe bet to not take candy from any one you don’t know. On one hand this may sound impossible but if you go with a big group of trick or treaters in your own neighborhood, between everyone there you can visit many familiar houses and few, if any, that are totally unknown. A great idea is to go to your local mall where almost every store hands out something for the kids.
If for some reason candy looks suspicious to you, trust your instincts and throw it away. Take note of any puncture marks in candy bars. If the candy wrapper looks very crinkled and wrinkled, its possibly a sign that the candy has been handled abundantly prior to gifting. A wrinkled wrapper is a very good way to hide pinholes. Of course discard any candy that does not have a wrapper at all. Don’t forget to check expiration dates as well.
A razor blade in an apple is something that has been perpetrated in the past. A razor blade is inserted from the bottom of the apple into the flesh. It is virtually undetectable until you bite into it, though if you’re looking for it you will spot it. It can be tough when an apple is smothered in delicious melted caramel but please do your best.
Small tinker toys and children’s jewelry have been known to host various drugs applied to the surface. Alot of these stories have been fairly exaggerated over the years but most stories come from some truth. So before you allow your kids to play with anything give it a good wash.
Halloween can be a crazy day full of running around and pigging out on candy. It goes by pretty fast though and unfortunately this holiday comes with some dangers. Just try to be involved with your child’s day, especially their candy. Teach them how to check as well.
Happy Halloween everybody.
