Trying to find a Halloween movie for middle school students can be a little tricky. Some kids have free range when it comes to the movies their parents allow them to watch. Other middle school kids are shielded by their parents and are still allowed only to watch G rated movies. Here are my favorite movies for middle school students. Most are rated PG and aren’t really scary but will hold the attention of kids between the ages of 11 and 14.
Nightmare Before Christmas 1993; Tired of scaring humans, Jack Skellington , the King of Halloween Town, decides to kidnap Santa. Skellington also plans on filling in for Santa and deliver shrunken heads to all the kids at Christmas. Leave it to Tim Burton to create a Halloween classic. PG 75 minutes
Beetlejuice 1988; Funny and just a wee bit scary this is another Tim Burton film older kid’s love. Many kids can relate to moving to a new home and feeling a little out of place. The dance scenes are catchy and Michael Kenton plays a pretty scary obnoxious ghost. The picture won an Oscar for Best Make up. PG 92 minutes
Ghost Busters 1984; Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray and Harold Ramis are a team of parapsychologist turned proton packing ghost exterminators. Ghostbusters went on to spawn Ghost Busters 2 and the Ray Parker Jr. hit single song from the movie Ghost Buster’s earned him an Academy Award Nomination for best song. PG 104 minutes
Ernest Scared Stupid 1991 is one of those movies that is so dumb it is funny? I think it is perfect for middle school boys. Ernest unleashes an army of trolls that capture kids tuning them into wooden dolls. As with all Ernest movies it all comes together in the end with Ernest saving the day. PG 92 minutes
Something Wicked This Way Comes 1983; This Disney film is a surreal psychological thriller. Based on the Ray Bradbury novel of the same name, the movie is pretty scary. The film revolves around two young boys and the dark secret held by the carnival that comes to their small town. I think it is especially scary for kids because the boys are faced with possible losing their parents. PG 95 minutes
