Have you ever wanted to play an old school game with a friend on the other side of the earth? You might notice that the game only has a LAN (Local area network) option for multi-player or the online server system has been discontinued. Fret not my friend, Hamachi lets you get around this nuisance. This easy to use program has worked wonders for me.
The biggest two reasons old games can’t be played over the net are that technology didn’t exist at the time, or maintaining the gamespy server wasn’t cost affective considering the community of the game diminished over time to insignificant numbers. This is a shame seeing how some of these old classics are still more fun than a lot of newer games. Luckily any game with a multi-player option is bound to have LAN capability.
LAN stands for Local area network. This means that two or more computers are physically connected with cables and can communicate with each other directly. But unplugging your 30lb desktop and if your lucky 6lb monitor and dragging it to a friends house just to play some age of empires II isn’t the most appealing of ideas. Not to mention how will you play KKND with that pen pall from Korea? You could try using direct IP connection, but that’s a hassle.
Hamachi offers a easy, quick and best of all free alternative! Hamachi lets you “establishing direct links between computers that are behind NAT firewalls without requiring reconfiguration” this basically means play LAN over the Internet by tricking your computer. All you need to do is to install the program and join a group with your friends that you want to play with. After joining the group if you and your friends try to pay the game and use the LAN option it behaves just like it would if the computers were physically connected. With a little research you can often find small community’s of gamers that still play these games. Some might even use Hamachi. If not, you could suggest it and try to get people interested in playing a few games with you.
The newer versions of Hamachi offer a free version with one that you can buy. For the purpose of playing games the free one works just fine.
Have fun and good luck!
