Do you use your broom to knock down cobwebs? That works but the mess that’s left on your broom is unsightly! You have to get rid of those spider webs but every time you do you’re faced with having to clean the broom again. Just water won’t get it, either. Running water over the broom only serves to dampen the webs and make them cling to the broom even more. You know what you need? A broom cover! That’s right; if you had a cover over your broom you wouldn’t have to worry about those webs that stick to the broom straws.
There’s a simple cover you can make that allows you to use your broom as you normally would but never have to pick cobwebs out of it again. All you need is a couple of hand towels and the gross days are over! Whenever the broom cover gets dirty you can simply remove it and throw it in the washer. Plus, whenever you’re not using your broom, the cover serves as a cute way to hide the broom straws.
Choose two identical hand towels – or different ones that are the exact same size – to make the cover. The best towels are ones with no “fringe” around the edges, but if they have this feature, cut them off or sew around them. Lay the towels so that the patterns are facing the same way and the right sides are facing each other.
Use an ordinary straight stitch to sew the towels. Start at one top corner and stitch straight down the side. Go across the bottom, then back up the opposite side. Remove the towels from under the presser foot and trim the threads. At the open side of this pouch you’ll sew a piece of quarter-inch elastic.
Position the end of the elastic up against one of the side seams. Begin sewing around the top, tugging the elastic slightly, but not pulling hard. Continue this until you’ve sewn the elastic all the way around the top of the pouch. If the towel has a finished edge there’s no need to hem it first. If the towel has been cut, fold it over a half-inch and position the elastic over the raw edge as you sew.
When using your broom to knock down cobwebs simply slide the new cover over the broom straws. The elastic will hold the pouch around the broomstick as you dust. When you’re finished just launder it as you would any towels! It’s a helpful dust buster you can make in minutes!
