What to do with those stacks of old handkerchiefs? No one really carries them around anymore but you sure do hate to throw them away! Of course, you can always use a few of them by making some stuff for you and your home. If you sew a little, or not at all, you can recycle some of those old hankies into new and useful things.
Make a heat pad for aching muscles by using two handkerchiefs. These should be the exact same size. If you sew you have two options for assembling the heat pad. The first one goes like this: stack one handkerchief on top of the other with their right sides together. Sew around three sides of the square then remove and trim the threads. Turn the hankies right side-out. Fill the pocket with rice. Sew the open side closed.
A quicker way to make the heat pad is to stack the hankies on top of each other with their wrong sides together. Sew around three sides and remove. Trim threads. Fill the pocket with rice then sew across the open area. To use these heat pads simply warm them in the microwave. Until you know for sure how long it takes to get the heat pad just the right temperature keep a close eye on it while it’s warming.
Make a heat pad for a stiff neck by using a single hanky. Fold it in half and sew across one short side and one long side. Turn the pouch right side-out. Fill the bag with rice and sew it closed. Make a larger one by sewing two handkerchiefs together. Now fold it in half, sew, turn right side-out, fill and stitch shut. If you don’t sew use fabric glue instead of needles and thread to make any of these heating pads.
Heat pads work well for sore muscles but they have another purpose, too. They can keep heat away from things. Make a hot pad for a counter or table by using two handkerchiefs. Stack them so that the right sides are facing each other. Cut a piece of felt and lay it on one of the handkerchiefs. Sew around all three pieces, but only on three sides, then turn the pouch right side-out. Sew the opening shut and use the finished pad to keep hot pots from touching tables and other surfaces.
If you’ve been wondering what to do with those old hankies, now you know! Make assorted heat pads and your world will be just a little more pleasant!
