Surgery in Rancho Cordova meant staying close by the hospital, in case there were any problems. When I found out we were getting a room somewhere different, my heart dropped. The other place has lots of parking, an elevator to the second level, and free wireless Internet and a light breakfast, at a reasonable price. However, I decided to be brave and trust that the new place would be satisfactory.
Approaching Hazel Avenue on Highway 50 from Folsom, I avoided the orange cones tossed all over the highway. Viciously, they had attacked cars and trucks slipping around on the drenched pavement, and paid for their nasty mood with their little orange-and-white striped lives. I stayed in the center lane of the off-ramp and crossed Hazel Avenue when the light turned green. Gas station on the left and McDonald’s; gas station on the right and Starbucks – okay, things were looking up already. Just a bit more and I saw, on the left, Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham.
The Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham are located at 12180 Tributary Point Drive, Rancho Cordova, CA 95670. Their phone number is 916-351-9192; the reservation number is 866-856-7044. They have a website, www.hawthorn.com. If you have an AARP card, book reservations through AARP. You can save a lot of money that way, and since you pay directly to AARP, you have no hassles when you check in or out.
I was impressed by the friendly, clean appearance of the building (yes, buildings can be friendly) and the incredible amount of parking spaces. There is parking in front, in back, and on the sides of Hawthorn Suites. The double glass doors open automatically, so there is no juggling around of luggage or fighting with wind trying to get into the building. The lobby is spacious and welcoming, and the staff at the check-in counter were courteous and welcoming, as well. They reminded us of the free breakfast in the morning, and pointed out the room where it would be served. The elevator to the second floor was conveniently located near the check-in counter. We noticed a computer and printer set up across from the elevator, so guests with flights scheduled could check in and print their boarding pass.
We don’t smoke. It was a pleasure to be in a hallway free from smoke, and a fresh-smelling room without smoke residue. My impression of the room? Both my husband and I were totally floored. There was a full kitchen: cupboards, dishes, silverware, pots and pans, dishwasher, refrigerator, microwave, and coffee maker. Both regular and decaf coffee pods were provided, and tea bags, for those preferring that beverage.
A desk for a laptop was in front of the kitchen area, with a nice sofa in front of the desk. There were two comfortable chairs and a coffee table, and a color television that swung for the front room or the bed area. The huge bed was off to the right of the “living area,” One large window faced the kitchen, and the other large window faced the bed. In a nook was another small table, which could be used as a beauty bar or, in our case, a desk for the second laptop. Across from the nook was the closet, which housed an iron and ironing board, and just past the nook was the large bathroom, with a tub/shower combination. The Wifi connection was excellent.
Breakfast in the morning was good. It was self-serve. They have one of the flipping waffle makers, where you spray anti-stick stuff, pour the mix from a cup, and flip the maker over till it beeps. They had bacon, scrambled eggs, pastries, bagels, cereal, and potatoes the first day. The next day excluded potatoes and bacon, exchanging them for corned beef hash, which was rather salty. Juice, coffee, and milk were offered as drinks. Several tables were scattered around the room, and a television was showing the early morning news. The room was very clean and organized.
There was always someone at the front desk to help. The staff smiled and made people feel welcome. I have found a new favorite place to stay when in that area of Sacramento. I would recommend Hawthorn Suites by Wyndham in Rancho Cordova to anyone, and especially to those with an AARP card that gives them a great discount when booking through AARP travel.
