Save those cans of unopened soup because now you can donate them to the hungry! Sunnyvale Community Services, located at 725 Kifer Road, is a non-profit organization dedicated to fighting hunger and homelessness (www.svcommunityservices.org).
There are volunteer opportunities for helping distribute bags of food to hundreds of needy families and seniors, lobby administrators to greet clients at the Kifer location, and volunteers are currently needed to collect toiletries that will be distributed to low-income and homeless clients. Seasonal volunteers are needed for the upcoming Thanksgiving and Christmas food drives where you can help sort toys. You can also hold a food drive at your school or at your workplace on behalf of SCS. Also check out the upcoming “Holiday Affaire Boutique” on Oct 23 whose sale proceeds will be used to help needy families.
Items of interest that are currently needed are any non-perishable and non-used soups, canned foods, powdered mild, pasta (in 2 lb bag), rice in 2lb bag, Mac n cheese, and unopened bottles of fruit juice. For the Holiday drives, you can also donate toys, hand held electronic games, small appliances, arts/craft kits, accessories and unused household items. Contact Marie Barlahan, the director of Volunteer Operations for further donation information.
SCS is partnered with United Way and Second Harvest Food Bank and will accept financial donations used for budgeting assistance with medical care, critical bills, and prescriptions for homeless families. For each donation, you can request a receipt to be used for tax purposes. The drop off times are Mornings from 9 am – 11: 30 am and Afternoons from 1 pm – 4:30 pm.
Clients have to renew a Monthly Food Program Card where the total number of people in the family and total household income are determined based on residency status, school records and proof of all income. City of Sunnyvale reported that 27% of its population falls into the low income category. Check with SCS for who can qualify for free and reduced price meals.
Get into the spirit of giving and help fight hunger by donating to the Sunnyvale Community Services!
