One of the healthiest ways to lose weight or have a successful diet is to give your metabolism a boost. Some people have natural higher metabolisms than others (like your skinny BFF who can eat whatever she wants and not gain an ounce) while others need to help re-program their metabolisms to work faster (like those of us who gain a pound just looking at a brownie). If you’d like to boost your metabolism safely and naturally, turn to the common items in your cabinet to give your calorie-burning efforts a big jolt.
Ginger is commonly used as a carsickness and morning sickness aide, but it is also a great way to boost your metabolism as well. You can drink ginger in a tea (add a dash of cinnamon for a tasty and effective boost) or take ginger (and ginger root) tablets as well for daily health.
Cinnamon is another great metabolism-boosting aide. Adding a dash of cinnamon to your breakfast foods or mixing it in with your coffee creamer (cinnamon is awesome in coffee and hot chocolate-try it) speeds up your metabolism and warms up the body. Your body can only retrieve energy from foods and supplements that have been either heated or cooled to the body temperature, and cinnamon being a naturally “hot” spice urges your metabolism to jump into high gear so your body can break it down for energetic and caloric use.
Here’s another metabolism-boosting tip- drink ice water. Ice water is too cold for your body to use immediately, and once again your metabolism has to jump in order to heat the water up so your body can use it. If you drink ice water all day, you are training your metabolism to work in high gear all the time. It’s like a workout for you on the inside.
Of course, hot spices will boost your metabolism as well, like Cayenne pepper, and even regular pepper. Try peppering your foods more than you salt them, which is better for your body anyhow (salt is a bloat-inducer and can lead to heart issues if overused) and there are so many different types of peppers and hot spices, you are sure to find one you can incorporate into your daily eating habits.
By introducing metabolism boosting herbs into your life (I have actually tried combining ginger, Cayenne pepper and cinnamon in a tea with surprising results- with a few drops of lemon juice, it was a spicy, tasty concoction) you can give your body an energetic burst, clear your senses and sinuses (I drank this tea when I was all plugged up from a cold) and refresh your metabolism so it’s not so sluggishly burning away your calories. Keep consistent in keeping your metabolism in high gear and you can easily burn more calories every day.
