Fatted Calf opened in Hayes Valley recently and has been a wonderful addition to the vibrant neighborhood. We love the mouth-watering display case of some of the the best meat and charcuterie you can find in the Bay Area. They also sell artisan pastas, pasture raised eggs, cheese and a bunch of other little yummy things like pickles and butter that make it tough to leave the store without a few extra purchases aside from your cured meats.
On a recent visit to Fatted Calf for couple of sandwiches for lunch (think meatball and bollito misto) we noticed that Fatted Calf is taking orders for heritage turkeys for Thanksgiving. The turkeys which are priced at $7.25/lb are from the Good Shepard Ranch in Kansas and the farmer who runs the farm is supposed to be the “Godfather” of American poultry. He is committed to protecting heritage breeds from disappearing from our dinner tables. I have never had a heritage turkey but have heard that heritage breeds are far more delicious and flavorful.
In addition, Fatted Calf is making sausages that can be used for dressing – boudin blanc and sage and onion sausages. Yum! Go ahead and place your orders today and don’t let Thanksgiving sneak up on you and catch you unprepared.
