I love dining out but I have to admit I enjoy more high end and upscale restaurants. Dive places are usually not my thing. It was my boyfriend’s birthday this past weekend and I told him to choose a brunch place of his choice. I figured he would choose a brunch buffet or a new hot spot for some mimosas or a tasty Bloody Mary. Instead he through a curve ball at me and said Hermitage Café. I had heard a lot about this little whole in the wall and had no previous desire to visit this “restaurant.” Since it was my boyfriend’s birthday I decided to be open minded and make his birthday special.
When we pulled up I was a bit hesitant and kind of lost my appetite. But, when we entered this quaint old fashioned diner type restaurant I felt an authentic vibe in the air. The smell of fresh coffee, pancakes, burgers and fries started to turn my appetite around. We sat at the cozy counter and the waitress came right over and brought us some fresh coffee. As I looked at the menu (which is printed up on the wall) I had a hard time figuring out what I should try. They had a choice of eggs, sausage, home fries, burgers, chicken fried steak, and a few other southern inspired meals. I couldn’t get over how cheap the prices where. I decided on a Grilled chicken sandwich with fries which cost $5.50. The birthday boy chose 2 eggs over easy, sausage, home fries, and toast which cost $4.80. We both enjoyed our meals and the service. Our coffee cups were always full and the staff was friendly and accommodating.
The bill in total including tax and tip cost $17. They accept cash only so be sure to hit the bank before. In-case you forget they do have an ATM machine located in the back of the restaurant. There are no computers or fancy cash registers. There’s just an old fashioned cash register and note pads to write down orders that are hung above the grill. They don’t even have a website and to me this makes it all the more an authentic, old-fashioned experience. The patrons in this cute, homey establishment were mostly regulars and were on a first name basis with the waitress and rest of the staff. I highly enjoyed my experience. The food was fresh and delicious. I can’t wait to revisit this authentic experience. I felt right at home.
