Hip Hop and Rap are deader than a doornail. This genre of music is shunned upon by the general public due to it’s portrayal of violence and gang activity. Sorry middle to upper class America, but this is life for us poor people.
Hip Hop and Rap were first created to be a crutch for the youth who were being pummeled by poverty. The true rappers of the 1990’s and early 2000’s always remembered this and didn’t forget where they came from. I can personally say that I probably would not be here if it wasn’t for Rap music.
Rappers and Hip Hop artists made incredible music. Their world-play and rhythm is sometimes genius and can not be re-created. These people spoke of the hard times and gave us hope to overcome it all, while never forgetting where they came from. Modern day rappers focus on simplicity and the promotion of materialism. All you hear about in Rap music today is how much money that particular artists has, the luxury cars they drive, and how many women they sleep with. This is a pity when thinking about why this genre of music was created in the first place. It’s funny too, because when Rap artists first decided to speak out against the government and how we are truly being oppressed, they wound up being killed suspiciously with no justice offered to the families.
Rap and Hip Hop died with the beginning of Dance Rap. Songs such as “Laffy Taffy” and “Lean Wit’ it Rock Wit’ it” placed emphasis on how much money you could spend at the club and this was the end of all hope. It’s too bad truly talented musicians such as Nas, Eminem, Jay-Z, and Lil Wayne have all sold out to the mainstream pop music which we have the audacity to call Rap and Hip-Hop. Hip Hop is dead.
