World of Warcraft or WoW is a massively multiplayer online role playing game (MMORPG) that was released on November 23, 2004. The original game had the classic warcraft factions called the Alliance and Horde. Players would choose a faction and then pick from one of the 4 races within each. The Alliance faction was made up of Humans, Dwarfs, Gnomes and Night Elves. The Horde faction was made up of Orcs, Undead, Tauren and Trolls.
The playable classes were called the paladin, rogue, mage, warrior, warlock, shaman, druid, priest and the hunter. The beautiful world of Azeroth consisted of Kalimdor and the eastern kingdoms. The level cap for the original WoW was 60. This online role playing game was so popular that the creators began adding expansions to add to the excitement and to accommodate new players.
The first expansion was released on January 16th, 2007 with the name of The Burning Crusade. It’s now more commonly known as BC. This expansion released a few new features to the already beloved game such as a new class for each faction. The Alliance faction received Dranie as their new class and the Horde received Blood Elves (formally known as high elves). A new area of play called the Outlands with a neutral city called Shathra was also introduced in this expansion along with sockets and flying mounts. This expansion raised the level cap to 70.
The second expansion of this MMO series was called Wrath of the Lich King and it was released for play on November 13th 2008. Northrend was introduced with this expansion and the level cap was raised to 80. A new class was added called the Death Knights (who start at level 55) and it can be played by any race of either faction. The Lich King expansion has brought on many new raids and has ended in Tier 10 gear.
The third WoW expansion is scheduled to be released on November 2nd 2010. The name is Cataclysm and the level cap will be raised to 85. The entire world is getting revamped with this expansion and flying mounts will be allowed in Kalimdor and the eastern kingdoms. The Horde faction will receive a new class of Goblins and the Alliance faction will receive Worgens, which is a large werewolf type creature that walks on two feet but runs on all four.
It’s rumored that there will be 9 new dungeons and 6 new raids releases along with 2 old dungeons getting a “heroic” mode for level 85 players but WoW fans will just have to wait to see if these are added to the expansion. Rated the number one MMORPG game currently online (based on the number of players monthly), WoW is sure to keep drawing in more fans as the world expands and new adventures open up to those who seek them.
