Somehow I get sucked into watching this show every week. It’s a peek into someone’s life and the world of compulsive hoarding. Watching this show makes me wonder how it gets this bad. It seems like it starts out slowly and builds up to a tremendous mess. I sit smugly on the couch and think I’d never be like that. I’d never obsess over every scrap of paper or plastic bottle. How could someone need so much stuff? How could you hoard boxes and boxes of soap for the dishwasher?
Then I remember that just last week I bought four tubes of toothpaste because they were on sale for a dollar apiece. Oh, yeah, and the five bottles of liquid dish soap when they were on clearance for 56 cents; even though I still had two bottles under the sink.
Getting rid of a book is like cutting off my right arm. Books are my friends; I can’t just throw or give my friends away! I re-read my favorite books over and over, which my husband thinks is crazy.
I’m also the one who always buys yarn when it’s on sale. I probably have a hundred skeins or more of yarn. I buy it with great intentions of making afghans and scarves for Christmas presents. I start multiple projects but rarely finish any. I could be snowbound for six months straight and not run out of things to do.
Wait, there’s more. I love scrapbooking and crafts in general. I’ve converted one of the spare bedrooms into my craft room and it’s overflowing with goodies. It looks like all my scrapbooking supplies have taken a deep breath and hiccupped all over the room. I have more patterned paper than I know what to do with and yet I still buy more. Diecuts, brads, stickers, embellishments, tools, you name it, I’ve got it. Open the closet door at your own risk!
So, while I’m sitting there watching Hoarders and thinking I’d never be like that, it dawns on me that, yes, I could! I’m betting there’s a little bit of a hoarder in all of us. I am now solemnly taking a vow that I will not let my clutter get out of control and I will keep a lid on things. If you don’t hear from me it’s because I’m laying low on Associated Content for awhile. I’ll be busy sorting patterned paper, using my stash, purging my books and crocheting those Christmas gifts that I started long ago!
