Gather your jar cookie mix ingredients.
A jar cookie mix contains all of the dry ingredients for producing a cookie recipe. For a single jar mix of chocolate chip cookies (to produce approximately two dozen cookies), these ingredients include:
2 ½ cups white flour (unsifted)
½ teaspoon baking soda
1 cup brown sugar (firmly packed)
½ cup white granulated sugar
1 package (12 ounces) semi-sweet chocolate chips
Be sure to collect all of your jar cookie mix ingredients before beginning.
Layer the dry cookie ingredients inside each jar.
The loveliest jar cookie mix gifts arrange all of the ingredients in a layered fashion. This is simple to do.
Begin by mixing the flour and baking soda. Place this first in the cookie mix jar.
Allow these ingredients to settle before adding the brown sugar. Tamp this down evenly to create a clean striation.
Next, pour the white granulated sugar into the cookie mix jar, spreading it directly atop the brown sugar.
Finally, add the semi-sweet chocolate chips to complete the jar cookie mix. Cover the cookie mix jar or container tightly with its own lid or plastic wrap.
Add an instruction tag for producing your jar cookie mix.
Type or write the mixing and baking instructions for your chocolate chip jar cookies on cardstock, an index card, a gift tag or a label.
Here are the basic instructions: Preheat oven to 350 degrees (F). Combine ½ cup vegetable shortening, ½ cup butter (or margarine), 2 eggs, 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1 teaspoon milk in a large mixing bowl. Add the jar cookie mix, and stir into well blended. Place cookies in golf ball-sized drops on ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 8-10 minutes.
Decorate your cookie mix jar.
Use ribbons, bows, tulle, starry garlands, evergreen sprigs or other accents to decorate your jar cookie mix container for gift giving. Wrap it all up in a brand-new festive dishtowel, and tie on a wooden spoon, plastic spatula, pack of recipe cards, pot holder or holiday cookie cutter for extra fun.
For variations, try substituting Reese’s Pieces, M&Ms, Heath Bar chips or other morsels for the chocolate chips.
